Department Description
The Stanford Adult Emergency Department is a Level 1 Trauma Center, a designated Comprehensive Stroke Center, Stemi receiving facility, and is Level III Geriatric Accredited. This brand-new state of the art department is designed to enhance every aspect of a patient-centered care experience. As a three-time Lantern Award winning department, the latest medical technologies have been implemented. The treatment spaces consisting of 66 beds and an 11 bed Clinical Decision unit with over 250 patients seen daily. Our emergency department prides itself on compassionate and excellent care working with a diverse population.

The Stanford Hospital Adult Emergency Department in Palo Alto is the only Level 1 Trauma Center between San Francisco and the South Bay. It serves the San Mateo and Santa Clara County communities and is a transfer center for facilities across and beyond the state of California that need the specialized expertise that Stanford Medicine offers. The Emergency Department is dedicated to rapid interventions and has designations as a Comprehensive Stroke Center and Chest Pain Center.

A Brief Overview
The Assistant Patient Care Manager is responsible for assisting the Patient Care Manager with clinical management and administrative coordination of a designated patient care unit(s) or service(s). The position supports the Patient Care Manager in promoting the achievement of the unit(s)' goals and objectives. This position works in a supportive manner as a resource for the patient care unit(s) and as a representative for the Patient Care Manager. Typically assigned responsibility for supervising patient care staff and operations for an assigned shift for a patient care unit(s) and/or for coordinating one or more administrative functions as assigned by the Patient Care Manager, ensuring consistent implementation and monitoring of organizational policies and standards of care, their work involves a combination of clinical (patient care) and administrative responsibilities. The Assistant Patient Care Manager provides consistent and timely information and feedback to the Patient Care Manager and is responsible for knowledge and application of all personnel policies and requirements of the collective bargaining agreements. Assistant Patient Care Managers differ from Patient Care Managers in that the latter are unit managers with total responsibility and accountability for one or more patient care units or services.

What you will do

  • Assists in the performance of the operational aspects of a designated unit(s) while providing mentoring and leadership support to the unit(s) staff; supervises the provision of quality, therapeutic and cost-effective patient care in accordance with standards of practice, hospital protocols, policies and procedures, and desired patient outcomes.

  • Assists Patient Care Manager in administrative/management functions and assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Patient Care Manager as delegated and/or in the case of absence.

  • Coordinates and directs the unit(s) patient care operations for an assigned shift, acting on behalf of the Patient Care Manager.

  • Facilitates orientation, training and ongoing staff development; assists in coaching, developing and corrective action of personnel as appropriate; participates in ongoing and annual evaluation of employee performance. Facilitates the effective delivery of competent, compassionate care by monitoring and evaluating patient care processes and outcomes to facilitate smooth workflow and desired outcomes on the patient care unit(s). Interprets to staff the application and implementation of the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the unit(s), department, and organization; communicates expectations nd monitors staff performance. Participates in unit goal and program planning, development, and evaluation of programs and special projects as assigned; participates in and supports continuous quality, process, and performance improvement and risk management programs at the unit(s) level.

  • Provides competent and compassionate patient care (appropriate to age and condition of the patient), serving as a role model and mentor; and assists with unit workload.

  • Serves as a liaison to the Patient Care Manager.


Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university

Experience Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

  • Five (5) years of nursing  work experience

Licenses and Certifications

  • California Registered Nurse (RN) license

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for providers issued by the American Heart Association

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association

  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification

  • Emergency Nurse Certification (ENC) preferred

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $83.98 - $111.27 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.

Overview JOB TITLE: Staff Nurse II CC/Department: 7010/Emergency Services Reports to: Administrative Director of Emergency Services JOB SUMMARY: The Staff Nurse is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for the assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for patients and their families in compliance with the standards for care at Seton Medical Center and Nurse Practice Act. Responsibilities Clinical Practice: Nursing 1 Assesses, collects and documents health assessment data focusing on the physical, emotional, spiritual, psychosocial and educational needs of the patient. a) Interviews the patient/family/significant other to complete Triage information. b) Identifies actual and potential needs and determines priority. c) Identifies barriers to learning. After initial triage evaluation, completes and documents an assessment, focusing on abnormal systems and actual and potential problems. Performs ongoing assessment as indicated. 2 Plans nursing care, based on priority of physical and psychosocial-emotional needs. a) Develops realistic short-term goals for each problem, involving the patient, family or significant others. b) Plan demonstrates understanding of age-related needs of the patient. c) Negotiates with patient, family, significant other and health care team members in planning for education and discharge needs. 3 Implements the plan of care including prescribed procedures and treatments. Organizes and prioritizes care based on individual needs and unit activity. Assesses for changes in patient’s condition and appropriateness of the plan. Initiates interventions using appropriate clinical expertise and knowledge. As Primary Nurse, coordinates the activities of health care team members in completing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. 4 Evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care delivered to reach the expected outcome. a) Evaluates the plan of care according to the current condition and changing needs of the patient. b) Accurately and concisely documents the patient’s status and response to the care delivered. Clinical Practice: Emergency Nursing 6 Utilizing professional nursing knowledge and skills. Appropriately assesses for: Physical and psychosocial-emotional needs. Barriers to learning. Educational/learning needs. Discharge needs. Age-related needs. Issues related to assault or abuse. 7 Analyzes patient related data, such as vital signs, past medical history, physical exam findings, laboratory values and other information, including age-specific criteria, to determine appropriate care. 8 Utilizes advanced, specialized knowledge and skills to implement interventions for all Emergency Services patients, by prioritizing needs, and using a patient centered approach. 9 Provides health education and teaching to patient’s, family members and/or significant others, that is age specific, providing for any barriers to learning. Clearly communicates health, treatment and discharge information, ensuring the patient, family member or significant other understands all discharge and follow-up instructions. 10 Effectively performs procedures, such as initiation of IV catheters and fluids, medication administration, dressings, patient teaching, etc., within their scope of practice, and unit, department and Medical Center policies and procedures. 11 Effectively performs other nursing procedures/skills, such as cardiac monitoring, rhythm interpretation, defibrillation, monitoring of conscious sedation, ABGs etc., based completed specialty training and their scope of practice, and unit, department and Medical Center policies and procedures. 12 Appropriately recognizes and quickly responds to emergency medical situations. a) Accurately assesses “A-B-Cs.” b) Initiates appropriate emergency treatment, i.e., CPR, O2, etc. c) Communicates critical information to other team members. 13 Maintains all required credentials and training (CA RN license, BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, AB508). 14 Remains current on emergency treatments/practices/procedures through attendance at staff meetings, continuing education events, in-services and the review of professional literature. 15 Integrates/applies new knowledge from education and research into clinical practice. 16 Demonstrates knowledge of and competence in age-related patient care. 17 Consistently demonstrates knowledge of state and federal regulations, such as Title XXII and COBRA/EMTALA.
