About the Role

The Operating Room Circulator Nurse will provide care and support to patients before, during and after surgery. OR Nurses also assist the surgeon and the surgical team in their tasks. 

POSITION’S ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Operating Room Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of OR Nurses include (but are not limited to): 

  • Assesses, plans, and evaluates the nursing care needs of the patient before, during and after a surgical procedure. 
  • Provides nursing care to the patient undergoing surgical procedures. 
  • Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients. 
  • Participates in the care of patients receiving conscious sedation. 
  • Carries out physician orders. 
  • Administers prescribed medications, applies dressings, and monitors vital signs. 
  • Assists physician during procedures. 
  • Maintains aseptic techniques and actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique. 
  • Coordinates the operating room with respect to sterility, cleanliness, availability of functioning equipment and supplies. 
  • Ensures the proper handling of specimens. 
  • Serves as the primary coordinator of all disciplines for well-coordinated patient care. 
  • Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate utilizing computerized documentation systems. 
  • Ensures that operating on correct patient and the correct procedure is being performed. 
  • Provides basic, bedside care. 
  • Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol. 
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms. 
  • May prep operating room for patient/procedure. 
  • Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology. 
  • Assists in positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient. 
  • Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens. 
  • Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis. 
  • Observes, checks, and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly. 
  • Handles patient documentation. 
  • Inventories/counts all surgery items both pre- and post-surgery. 
  • Selects and handles instruments and supplies used for the operation. 
  • Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery. 
  • Delivers direct surgical care by assisting physicians. 
  • Helps control bleeding. 
  • Provides wound exposure. 
  • Sutures patients after the surgery. 
  • Float among various clinical services, were qualified and competent. 
  • Provides age and culturally appropriate care. 
  • Orients and mentors new staff members. 
  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program and holds a current Registered Nursing license, in good standing with the State licensing board. 
  • Current and active CPR certification. 
  • Minimum of three (3) years OR experience. 
  • Cognitive skills as related to the position.

Assistant Chief Nursing Officer

Description Description SUMMARY: The primary purpose of the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) is to assist the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) in planning, organizing, developing, and directing the day-to-day functions of the Nursing Department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility, and as may be directed by the General Manager, the Medical Director, and/or the Chief Nursing Officer, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times. Assist the MDS/CPC in planning, scheduling, and revising the MDS, including the implementation of RAPs and Triggers. • Encourage the resident and his/her family to participate in the development and review of the resident’s plan of care. • Be sure that staff members are providing care that reflects the wishes of the resident. • Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information including protected health information. Utilizes the Nursing Process for the delivery and management of patient’s care from Admission to Discharge, appropriate to the developmental age of the patient population. 2. Performs patient assessment/reassessment according to standard procedure. 3. Develops and coordinates individual plan of care including discharge planning. 4. Directs, supervises, coordinates and evaluate nursing care within assigned clinical setting. 5. Delegates appropriately to others in accordance with job description and competency level. 6. Documents patient care according to standard procedure. 7. Develops, implements/coordinates and documents Education Plan for patient/family/ significant other. 8. Ensures quality and continuity of care through collaboration with other health care providers. 9. Administers medications, performs treatments, therapies and operates equipment according to policy and procedure. Assists physician with treatment and procedures and special tests as required or directed. 10. Participates in and supports Nursing Governance activities. 11. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: 1. Current Massachusetts licensure and registration. 2. Completion of an accredited school of nursing program. 3. BLS is a requirement for every RN unless advance cardiac life support (ACLS) certification is current, in addition to any unit specific certifications and competencies. Experience/Skills: Required: 1. Thorough knowledge of the discipline of Nursing. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents. III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions: Work is considered medium. Position requires work indoors in a normal patient care environment. Hyperbaric RN: This RN focuses on the administration of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patients as prescribed by the Hyperbaric Physician and is responsible for the safe and effective operation of the hyperbaric chamber(s) and related support systems. This RN is also designated as the HBO Safety Director. In addition to a MA RN license, the following is required: 1. Be certified as a CHT, CHRN or DMT within 36 months of hire. 2. Must complete a National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology approved hyperbaric medicine introductory course within 6 months of hire.
