The Heart Center is located in the Shawn Jenkin’s Children Hospital that opened in 2020, is a 29-bed, medical surgical unit staffed by board-certified cardiologists and cardiac intensivists, highly skilled and specially trained nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical pharmacists, dietitians, child life specialists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, case managers and social workers.

Hours per week: Rotating

Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: (14) 13-hour shifts in a month which includes daytime, nights and weekends.

Patient Population Focus: Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) and Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown Unit.

Required Training and Experience

Required Minimum Training:

Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.

Preferred Experience: If applicable, department to fill in the preferred experience. Ex: Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a PA, AGACNP or ACNP in a Pediatric ICU (PICU). Previous experience as an APP in the ICU or step down environment and/or pediatric and congenital heart disease experience.

Degree of Supervision

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary

Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date:

Basic Life Support (BLS).

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.

Job Duties:

Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:

• Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations

• Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline

• Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill

and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief

• Initiates referrals to other health care provides, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician

• Documents and bills for direct care provided

• Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice

Additional Job Description

Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and two years clinical experience required, at least one year of which must have been in a specialty area of care. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner specific to the area of employment required unless a new graduate. New graduates must be certification eligible upon employment, and obtain certification within six months of employment. Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse and hold official recognition as a Nurse Practitioner from the South Carolina Board of Nursing. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required

Job Description Summary Advanced Practice Provider (APP) (NP/PA) Fellow Summary: One-year fellowship focuses on clinical experiences as well as a robust didactic curriculum, to provide well-rounded education intended to fully prepare an APP for a full-time position in specialty areas. Job Description Summary The successful applicant will be a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant interested in working full-time in the care of pediatric patients with diabetes and a variety of other endocrine diagnosis. Patient Population Focus: Outpatient Patient Population Age Range: 0 years - 21 years Required Training and Experience Required Minimum Training : Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below. Physician Assistant or APRN License Type/Certification: Primary Care Pediatric NP or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PCPNP/PNP) : Pediatric patients (birth to age 21), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting. Family NP (FNP) : (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan. Required Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience specializing in Pediatric Endocrinology. Preferred Certification: Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES). Degree of Supervision Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician. Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date: Basic Life Support (BLS). DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day. Job Duties (list job tasks) Provides direct care to patients through the following activities: Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations. Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline. Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician. Documents and bills for direct care provided. Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice. Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research. Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization. Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education. Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members. APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law. This position may require travel between area clinical locations, including but not limited to: North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Summerville and Downtown Charleston. Additional Job Description Physical Requirements Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs.
