Texas Oncology is looking for a Oncology Infusion Registered Nurse (RN) to join our team! This position will support the Baytown, Texas location. This position is Monday-Friday, no weekends or holidays, and no call.

This position will be either a level I, II or Senior based on candidate experience.

What does the Oncology Registered Nurse (RN) do?

Under minimal supervision, the Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care for patients adhering to national and company standards and guidelines for specialty regulations. Demonstrates knowledge of physiological, psychological, and developmental and age specific differences in the patient population including late adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and the elderly. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to provide for assessment and therapeutic management of patient/family needs. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities:

Plan, implement, coordinate, evaluate and promote the continuity of care consistent with established standards and practices.

Assesses patient/family needs and provides teaching and other instructional material.

Prepares and administers therapies under the direction and supervision of a physician.

Administers all medications/blood products using correct medication/blood product, dosage/amount, route, time and technique.
Assures pre-authorization and appropriate consent forms are obtained prior to administration of therapies where applicable.
Facilitates dose modification by assessing patient, assessing labs, consulting protocol or treatment plan, calculating dose, and consulting physician regarding dosage modifications, problems and symptom management
Performs venipuncture, accesses implanted ports and maintains central lines catheter devices.
Maintains accurate documentation of assigned patient care and treatments provided.
Applies knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following background and experience:    

Education/Training

Level I

Graduate from an accredited program for professional nursing education, BSN preferred.
RN state license and current registration with the State Board of Nursing in practicing state.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Must maintain continuing education requirements.
Entry level - 0-3 years nursing experience, oncology experience strongly preferred

Level II

Minimum three (3) years of nursing experience, oncology experience strongly preferred

Level Senior

In addition to levels I and II:

Minimum five (5) years nursing experience, including at least one year in oncology strongly preferred
Oncology certification preferred

Assesses patients' health before, during and after chemotherapy treatments. Monitors for side effects, complications, and signs of infection. Documents patient responses to treatments. Performs on site and telephone triage using best practice guidelines and documentation to ensure patients receive the appropriate level of care in the right setting at the right time by the right caregiver using the approved equipment and supplies. Works closely with the supervising physicians and other healthcare professionals to create and implement treatment plans. Communicates any changes in patient conditions to the medical team. Assists in coordinating supportive care services like nutritional counseling, social services and palliative care. Maintains accurate patient records, including treatment plans, progress and side effects. Follows institutional policies, and USP 797 & 800 safety standards. Respects and maintains privacy and confidentiality per HIPPA guidelines. Acts as a patient and healthcare advocate by maintaining a safe environment and promoting quality healthcare services. Adheres to standards of practice for professional nursing. Stays updated on advancements in chemotherapy treatments and oncology nursing best practices. Participates in continuing education, certifications and training programs. Partners with providers to establish and monitor clinical competencies and coordinates continuing education for nursing staff. Oversees onboarding of new nurses ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to deliver safe and effective patient care. Evaluates directly or assists other providers in evaluating nursing staff. Educates patients and their families about chemotherapy, side effects, and self-care at home. Provides emotional support and counseling to patients coping with cancer. Teaches strategies for managing treatment-related symptoms. Assists clinical and administrative staff in formulating goals and objectives to meet both qualitative and quantitative outcomes. Analyze and interpret quality reports to identify trends, ensure compliance, and drive continuous improvement in patient care and operational performance of nursing staff. Operates and maintains IV infusion pumps and other chemotherapy delivery systems. Ensures proper sterilization and safety measures are followed. Maintains the COLA certification within the laboratory that enables the clinic to function by running CBCs prior to treatment where applicable. Communicates effectively with collaborative team while escalating critical results and issues in an appropriate and timely manner. Adheres to the standard of practice for professional nursing. Provides exemplary internal and external customer service. Participates in the development of nursing and clinical policies procedures, and competencies. Develops and/or acquires instructional materials, supplies, and equipment necessary to conduct training, continuing education and staff development. Manages Human Resources activities of department in regards to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning. Performs other duties as assigned. Certification/Skills: Deep knowledge of chemotherapy protocols, oncology treatments, side effects, and clinical management of cancer patients. Ability to make independent, expert-level clinical decisions with a focus on patient safety and optimal care outcomes. Strong leadership capabilities, with proven experience mentoring and training nursing staff. Skilled in assessing clinical competencies and guiding less experienced staff in their professional development. Ability to analyze complex clinical situations and implement solutions that improve patient care. Skilled in developing and implementing clinical policies and procedures that ensure best practices and enhance operational efficiency. Ability to effectively communicate with interdisciplinary teams, patients, and families to ensure seamless care coordination. Strong interpersonal skills to foster a collaborative team environment and promote shared decision-making. Actively participating in continuing education, certification programs, and professional development programs to stay current with advances in oncology care and nursing leadership. Registered Nurse (RN) State Licensure or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) by Texas Board of Nursing (BON) required Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) required ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate by Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) required Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) preferred Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) by Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) preferred Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited school required Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) Minimum Experience: 5 years of oncology experience required Physical Requirements: Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
