Radiologic Technologist 1/Medical Assistant - Per Diem

This is a dual role that requires flexibility and knowledge of both Radiology and Medical Assisting.  Accountable to the Danbury Satellite Practice Manager, with a dotted line clinical supervisory link to the Diagnostic Radiology Lead Technologist, Assistant Manager of Radiology, and Manager.  Operates general, fluoroscopic and portable radiographic equipment to performing a variety of radiology examinations/procedures on pediatric inpatients/outpatients. Apply prescribed ionizing radiation for the sole purpose of producing diagnostic quality images under the supervision of a Physician.  In addition to this primary responsibility, the employee will perform Medical Assistant responsibilities including, but not limited to a variety of administrative, clinical, departmental support, and documentation duties to promote the health, safety, and comfort of CT Children’s patients and families.  Due to the infrequent volume of radiology tasks, the expectation for this role would be 20% radiology/80% medical assisting, with the possibility for future growth of the radiology portion.

RADIOLOGY TECHNICIAN: 

  • Ability to assess imaging orders for completeness, accuracy and appropriateness. Involves patient/parent/and caregiver in care and exam/procedure. 
  • Demonstrates age-related competency and cultural sensitivity. Introduces self and role. Explains procedure thoroughly to patient and or parent before performing the procedure. Performs radiologic exams/procedures.
  • Allows time for and encourages questions. Provides support and effective communications to other members of the department and healthcare team. Works efficiently as a team member. Consults with physicians, RNs and other technologists to provide quality imaging services. 
  • Adheres to a culture of safety. Washes hands and sanitizes equipment as directed.
  • Assure timeliness and accuracy when performing requested exams. Performs radiologic exams per protocol. Notifies appropriate ordering provider of recommended changes to ordered exam. Provides support to other modalities within the department as required.
  • Performs diagnostic exams for all areas supported by the department of Radiology including the ED, OR, onsite and off-site radiology locations. Ensures all images are of excellent diagnostic quality. Images will include appropriate patient demographics, positioning, technique and laterality markers. In accordance with ALARA principals, patients will be appropriately shielded and imaged to minimize radiation dose.  
  • Educates and mentors radiologic skills of new technologists and students.  Evaluates clinical and technical proficiency. 
  • Ability to successfully utilize information technology systems associated with role. Assures that images and documentation are complete and accurate in the patient medical record.  Adheres to all hospital and department policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols. 
  • Coordinates equipment service as required. 
  • May be called upon to cover nights, evenings, weekdays, weekends and holidays. Rotates shifts and scheduled on-call responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors consistent with the organizational standards.  Demonstrates exemplary customer service.
  • Practices within the scope of the state of CT Radiologic license and ARRT (R) certification.    
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MEDICAL ASSISTANT: 

  • A Medical Assistant (MA) may be required to perform any or all of the following fundamental Documentation, Administrative, Clinical, and Department Support functions:

ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT

  • Supports the patient check-in and check-out processes.
  • Scheduling and coordinating all patient appointments.
  • Answering and directing calls.
  • Process pre-authorizations and pre-certifications.
  • Prepare and files medical record.
  • Provides cross coverage for other administrative roles.
  • Maintains clinical files according to organization/department protocol.
  • Processes patient related correspondence.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.

CLINICAL SUPPORT

  • Ensures efficient patient flow.
  • Prepares treatment rooms and equipment for patient examinations.
  • Provides appropriate procedural support following department specific guidelines.
  • Performs initial intake of patient, up to and including:  Interviews patient and family to obtain chief 
    complaint/reason for visit, vital signs, and allergy information.  Accurately records and/or updates relevant patient information.
  • Performs daily Quality Controls (QC) for all Point of Care (POC) testing.
  • Obtain specimens, accurately performs and records patient POC testing per policy.
  • Under provider and/or RN direction, performs tracking and retrieval of patient lab/diagnostic testing results 
    to facilitate timely provider review and follow-up.
  • Under provider and/or RN direction, performs the administrative functions of the patient prescription renewal process in accordance to policy.
  • Provides cross coverage for other appropriate clinical roles.

DEPARTMENTAL SUPPORT

  • Provide support as needed for departmental medical record audits.
  • Cleans and stocks patient care rooms between patients.
  • Maintains appropriate inventories of all medical supplies.
  • Stocks and maintains all patient related forms and educational materials.
  • Utilizes equipment appropriately and notifies Practice Manager in a timely fashion of equipment/facility 
    break-down or damage.

DOCUMENTATION

  • Documentation is legible and falls within the appropriate MA scope/Organizational documentation 
    guidelines.
  • Accurately documents patient information on appropriate forms.  Demonstrates accuracy in basic data entry
    and data retrieval of paper/electronic patient records.

OTHER RELATED ACTIVITES

  • Performs other duties as may be assigned to promote the health, safety and comfort of CT Children's 
    patients and families. 
  • Ability to travel to satellite locations may be required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the age-related differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific 
    populations form neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice.  Demonstrates cultural 
    sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of safety needs and a basic knowledge of medical terminology, infection 
    control, risk management, and environment of care policies.
  • Asks questions, clarifications, and assistance when needed and in situations that fall outside of the MA 
    scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates support for the mission, vision, values, and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with CT Children’s standards.
  • Basic Understanding of CT Children’s Policies and Procedures.
  • Understanding of the organization’s environment of care.

Special Considerations:
Those Medical Assistants hired as a “float” or exclusively for the satellites must demonstrate flexibility and knowledge of documentation/procedures/workflow in the various departments to maximally support the patient experience.   
 

Education and/or Experience Required:

  • Education Required: Graduate of Radiologic Technologist program accredited by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) required.

Education and/or Experience Preferred:

  • Completion of medical assistant training program accredited by an accrediting body approved by the American Association for Medical Assistants or American Medical Technologists (or completion of equivalent course of study provided by the military) preferred; if formal training program was not completed, then certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) granted by the American Medical Technologists is preferred.  
    OR
    Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant training program is preferred.

License and/or Certification Required: 

  • Registered as a Radiologic Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology; ARRT (R) in good standing. New graduates will be given up to 90 days to become ARRT(R) with documentation of program completion.
  • Current State of Connecticut Radiographer License.  New graduates will be given 90 days to obtain Connecticut Radiographer License according to Connecticut Statutes 20-74bb(f).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire and maintained thereafter.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Skills:
