Job Description
Supports the AVP - Clinical Informatics in the development of strategic and operational plans for both the Clinical Informatics department and care delivery service lines in support of the overall UAB Medicine strategic goals. Under minimal supervision, the Director Clinical Informatics collaborates with clinical leaders system-wide to facilitate the achievement of the UAB Medicine organization’s mission and goals through the effective use and application of clinical information and technology across the continuum of care. The Director - Clinical Informatics holds self and others accountable for assigned work/results through the clear definition and meeting of service expectations. As a resource, the Director - Clinical Informatics provides on-going support for the healthcare system and maintains up-to-date knowledge of trends and advances in the field of Nursing and Healthcare Informatics. Builds positive relationships with UAB Medicine, at all levels, to maximize efficient and effective use of clinical information systems (CIS). Advocates for evidence-based clinical practice, clinical content/data governance, and creation/realization of organizational value demonstrated in user satisfaction, clinical productivity and quality outcome improvements. The Director - Clinical Informatics is responsible for coordinating aspects of clinical systems planning, implementation, training, ongoing support and evaluation. S/he applies informatics practice expertise to design and deliver clinical informatics service standards and methods in alignment with professional standards of clinical and business practice.

Minimum Requirements
Required: Master’s Degree in a Healthcare related field, 3 years management experience, and 5 years applied clinical informatics experience. Work experience MAY substitute for education requirement IF has earned Bachelor’s in a healthcare related field.
Preferred: Master’s Degree in Quality, Performance Improvement or Health Informatics
Licenses / Certifications / Registrations
Required: Current State of Alabama licensure commensurate with healthcare degree (i.e. RN, Radiology, etc.) Preferred: Professional certification in Healthcare Quality, Performance Improvement, and/or Informatics.
Supervisory Responsibilities The number of direct and indirect reports may vary.
Budget Responsibilities
Management of funds with signatory and/or budget authority.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Must be flexible, highly motivated, and possess effective problem solving skills. Must demonstrate an ability to: (1) establish and maintain collaborative working relationships; (2) communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms with people of all socioeconomic backgrounds; (3) set clear priorities and achieve outcomes in all UAB Medicine care delivery environments; (4) negotiate effectively; (5) respect and preserve the confidential data to which this position has access; (6) perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure; (7) effectively organize time, tasks, and information; and (8) exercise discretion appropriately

Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Serves as a clinical informatics consultant in the life-cycle of CIS solutions.
- a) Collaborates with all levels/venues of the UAB system to address complex cross continuum CIS issues and identify methodologies for implementing, utilizing and modifying CIS solutions and data structures that support health care access, delivery, and evaluation.
- b) Optimizes the use of information and technology to support patient care across the continuum of care.
- c) Utilizes critical analysis to plan, problem solve, and mitigate risk in the design and deployment of CIS solutions and related processes.
- d) Guides processes to collect, record and share patient information, reduce redundancy, and standardize clinical practice and documentation where possible within the CIS capabilities.
- e) Functions as a clinical informatics expert and collaborates with appropriate audiences to enhance use and efficiency of CIS.
- f) Provides consultation and problem resolution support in conjunction with implementation teams and project managers for the need/problem and measure(s) of success definition for the selection, implementation, deployment, and sustainment of new CIS solutions.
- Leads Clinical Adoption efforts for CIS implementations and upgrades.
- a) Effectively leads system-wide cross-functional teams in a matrix reporting structure, as well as supports collaboration and encourages acceptance of and enthusiasm for changes associated with Care Transformation.
- b) Establishes credibility among stakeholders.
- c) Recognizes the impact of change and strategically supports communication and education efforts.
- d) Supports the development and maintenance of policy and procedures related to CIS.
- e) Assists project sponsors in realizing expected improvements through engagement on the development and execution of CIS strategic and tactical plans.
- f) In cooperation with organization and clinical leaders, assists in developing and implementing plans and strategies for gaining acceptance and promoting ongoing use of CIS, notably providers, nursing, clinic staff, ancillary, etc.
- g) In cooperation with organization and clinical leaders, facilitates the development and implementation of clinical process redesign, workflow redesign and information flow design as it relates to clinical information systems.
- Facilitates effective use of clinical information and technology to enable end user efficiency and effectiveness.
- a) Participates in the formulation and realization of Clinical Informatics Department (CID) strategy to support change management, value realization, and sustainment.
- b) Coordinates and facilitates on-going CIS evaluation including: end user efficiency and service delivery value.
- c) Leads the design, implementation, execution, and evaluation of a follow-up process to assure effective use of CIS.
- Supervises personnel within assigned area.
- a) Monitors and takes appropriate action to address any EHR/Clinical Informatics areas of concern identified in the annual Employee Engagement and Physician Engagement Surveys.
- b) Engages direct reports and key constituents in regularly scheduled Leadership Rounding, taking action on items within span of control and decision making, and reporting findings and escalating barriers/concerns as appropriate to CI Senior Director/AVP Clinical Informatics.
- c) Actively monitors performance of direct reports through direct observation, end user survey results, constituent feedback, self-assessments, etc.
- d) Monitors and ensures established CI service delivery expectations and organization personnel policies and procedures are followed within the assigned area.
- e) Documents performance observations, action plans, and conversations throughout the evaluation period as part of the individualized professional development plan and behavioral performance responsibilities.
- f) Completes performance evaluations annually for each employee based upon objectives and timeframes.
- g) Sets professional growth example for peers and team members.
- h) Promotes, discharges and disciplines personnel following UAB Medicine Human Resources policies and procedures.
- Enables effective training and education support for CIS.
- a) Drects the Manager - Clinical Informatics in planning and delivery of testing and clinical end user training.
- b) Leads the development of service line super users to augment CID support resources.
- c) Coordinates CID support for CIS implementations.
