UofL Health – Jewish Hospital opened in 1905 with a mission to provide all patients with the highest quality care and a strong emphasis on research and education. Located in the heart of the downtown medical campus, Jewish Hospital is a 462-bed, internationally renowned, comprehensive, quaternary medical center that is developing leading-edge advancements in a vast number of specialties and services including heart care, neurosciences, orthopedics and surgical care.

UofL Health – Jewish Hospital is ranked as “High Performing” by U.S. News & World Report in four specialty conditions and procedures:
*Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
*Heart Bypass Surgery
*Heart Failure
*Pacemaker Implantation
This recognition is given to programs that demonstrate exceptional performance in the respective areas. Only a small percentage of hospitals achieve the “High Performing” ranking for each area.

Since the first transplant, a kidney transplant in September of 1964, the transplant center has hosted many firsts in Kentucky and the world including:

*The world’s first successful heart transplant following the use of thoracic ventricular assist device

*The world’s most successful hand transplant
*Kentucky’s first heart transplant
*Kentucky’s first pancreas transplant
*Kentucky’s first adult liver transplant
*Kentucky’s first double-lung transplant
*Kentucky’s first dual heart-liver transplant

Jewish Hospital is Kentucky’s first hospital to be designated as a federally approved center for five solid organ transplants: heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas. It’s among a very small percentage of hospitals across the country capable of performing this complex mix of cases.
