Job Summary and Qualifications

The Operating Room Technician has the responsibility of supporting the mission of the hospital to be the most comprehensive, cost effective provider of quality healthcare services for the Northeast Houston Area. The Technician is assigned to the Operating Room to assist physicians with instruments during the surgical procedure. This position has the responsibility of supporting the mission of the hospital which is to provide patients with the highest quality of health care within an atmosphere of genuine caring. The Technician is responsible for the preparation of room and needed supplies and equipment for assigned cases and is responsible for all instruments and insuring needed counts are completed. Employee will be responsible for knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psychological, educational, safety and related criteria for the infant/child, neonate, adolescent, adult and geriatric population.

What you will do in this role:

Demonstrates knowledge of applying surgical gloves using aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile field.
Demonstrates knowledge of preparing for surgery by “pulling” the appropriate supplies and instruments for the procedure.
Understands and recognizes the different surgical instruments and their applications.
Displays appropriate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology in order to prepare and assist in surgical/endo procedures.
Maintains a safe sterile field by: a – positioning sharps correctly b – labeling all medications on sterile field c – understanding of electrocautery and other devices that generate heat to prevent possible fires in the O.R. d – Participating in a “timeout” with rest of the surgical team to maintain patient safety.
Demonstrates ability to appropriately set up for a surgical/ endo procedure and follow protocol in the counting of supplies/instrument to ensure no foreign object is left inside of the patient.
Understands the principles of and is able to competently assist a physician during a procedure and possesses adequate knowledge of the procedure itself.
Displays the ability to differentiate sutures and their applications.
Demonstrates the ability to follow through until problems are addressed or corrected.
Alert to the detection of errors in own work and the work of others with appropriate corrective actions initiated.
Demonstrates a teamwork approach in the care of a patient during the perioperative phase.
Participates in department’s process improvement activities.

What Qualifications You Will Need:
* Graduate of a Surgical Technology program or military equivalent training in the Surgical Technologist role is required.
* Certification in Surgical Technology
* Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association required.
* 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience is preferred

POSITION’S ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Certified Surgical Technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative. procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. Duties are as follows: STERILE PROCESSING DUTIES: Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies, and equipment, and assembles, wraps, and sterilizes trays of instruments. Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas. Monitors biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment. Sort mismatched sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment and makes them available to sterile processing customers in a timely manner. Restocks, labels, and maintains inventory, submits requisitions, collects, and distributes instruments, trays, crash carts, and facility medical equipment. Performs environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, the operating room, and in equipment storage areas. Verifies that equipment functions properly, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair, or replacement, and removes defective equipment. Maintains a clean work area. Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards. SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST DUTIES: Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure. Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure. Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed. Helps in draping sterile field. Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure. Prepares sterile dressings. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room. Assists in prepping room for the next patient. All other duties as assigned. ROBOTIC DUTIES: Able to answer both clinical and technical questions about the da Vinci surgical system Tasked with plan for sustainable growth of the robotics program Serves as main point of contact Enables surgeon access and facilitates best in class case support experience Targets and supports new surgeons interested in surgical procedures using the da Vinci system Coordinates and attends regularly scheduled robotic Steering Committees and provides operations updates on the progression of the program Works to configure the operation room ® in a way that is efficient for the use of a da Vinci surgical system Works with materials management to order da Vinci surgical instruments and accessories as needed Maintains lean par levels of all da Vinci surgical instruments and accessories that should be in stock Creates a metric tracking system for robotic cases to set benchmarks and evaluates progress towards the goals in reduction of non-operative time and more efficient OR workflow Based off usage metrics based on instrument utilization data, determines where it makes sense to create trays and where instruments should be peeled back Works with surgeons and nursing staff to lean out preference cards and determine which standing orders are needed for all robotic assisted procedures Works with the OR manager or charge nurse to ensure operating rooms, designated for robotic-assisted surgical cases, are properly staffed Works with the nursing staff to ensure robotic rooms have all ancillary supplies needed for robotic surgeries performed with a da Vinci surgical system Establishes a training pathway for all new hires or those that will be working in the OR designated for robotic-assisted surgical procedures, including assigning online modules, providing an in-service on the da Vinci surgical system, and observing cases Establishes clinical competencies for all staff involved in robotic-assisted surgical procedures and explains guidelines for annual testing to ensure those competencies are met Educates the OR staff on updates or new products used within robotic-assisted surgical procedures Troubleshoots any issues with the da Vinci surgical system during surgical procedures Initiates RMA process for damaged instruments and scopes Assists as scrub nurse or First Assist at patient side during robotic-assisted surgical procedures if applicable Responsible for maintaining, updating, and collecting the daily wrap-up sheet Responsible for storing other da Vinci surgical system documentation in a centralized location or dedicated binder such as a Communication Binder. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 3 Years’ experience as a Surgical Technologist Preferred, or equivalent Military training. Two (2) years of experience as a surgical technologist and/or has demonstrated competency in two (2) or more specialty areas. Demonstrates knowledge and practice of perioperative patient care concepts. Certified Surgical Technologist Required. Why Join Legent Health?
