Akron General's 6400 Psychiatric Unit has a mixed patient population, with some seeking psychiatric support and others medical assistance. As a Patient Care Nursing Assistant (PCNA) on the team, you will perform various tasks, ensuring patients receive frequent attention and observation as needed. This is a hands-on role that requires a present, attentive and patient caregiver who is willing to learn new medical technologies and thrive in a fast-paced environment. On this team, you will gain a wide variety of skills you can use in advanced positions or other departments. 

A caregiver in this position works evenings from 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. including every other weekend and 3 holidays per year.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfers or emergencies. 
  • Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.  
  • Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight and height. 
  • Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction and removing urinary Foley Catheters. 
  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner. 
  • Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge. 
  • Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly. 
  • Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area. 
  • Document patient care in the electronic medical record.  
  • Assist in keeping patient rooms in order, report equipment that is out of order, clean equipment and inventory and distribute unit linen and supplies. 
  • Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon hire or within new hire period 
  • Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)  
  • One year of recent acute care experience OR military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1)
