Summary

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Responsible for meeting patient priority needs by assessing, participating in interdisciplinary care planning, providing and /or delegating care and evaluating patient responses and progress toward clinical outcomes. Contributes to an efficient and effective work environment through activities including professional communication and documentation, precepting and/or resourcing of others.

Supervises Licensed Practical Nurses and/or other support staff in the delivery of patient care as described in Nebraska Statute 38.

 

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

7. *Evaluates the patient’s response to and effectiveness of interventions.

8. *Evaluates patient’s progress toward established outcomes.

9. *Incorporates cultural considerations into the plan/delivery of care.

10. *Includes family, significant other, or identified support person in the care of the patient as appropriate.

11. *Documents patient care and related information according to Bryan Medical Center procedures for documentation.

12. *Provides care in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary team.

13. *Facilitates patient’s transition to the next level of care.

14. Assumes responsibility in a shared or delegated assignment and supports team member’s practices through timely communication.

15. Serves as a role model to colleagues, students and other care providers.

16. *Actively participates in continued learning opportunities and continued self-development pertinent to the work unit and duties of the job.

17. Integrates evidence based research findings into practice in accordance with policy and procedure.

19. Appropriately utilizes all safety equipment when indicated and as defined by organizational procedure (i.e. lifting equipment, PPE, sharps, etc.).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit of assignment including but not limited to population-specific competencies and participates in annual skill competency verification.

2. Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to nursing applications and relative practice area.

3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

4. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

5. Ability to delegate, provide instruction and evaluate the work of LPN’s and unlicensed professional

6. Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information.

7. Ability to exercise professional judgment, courtesy and tact in daily interactions with others.

8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with health care team members and diverse patient populations.

9. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment relevant to changing patient needs, including work with patients with acute, chronic, and complex disease processes, and those who are dying.

10. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act. Must provide evidence of certification and/or instruction for practice area as required by State or Federal standards/regulations.

 

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.

Assists primary caregiver with insertion of IUPC and management of amnioinfusion. Provides assessments, interventions and evaluations of the woman experiencing augmentation and induction of labor and chemical cervical ripening. Provides assistance as needed to the anesthesia provider. Monitors the effects of analgesia and anesthesia on the mother and her fetus and provides appropriate interventions and evaluation. Prepares the delivery area to provide a safe and secure environment for vaginal or Cesarean birth. Circulates during vaginal and Cesarean birth to provide assistance to the primary care giver and surgical team as directed and provides care of the mother and her support person(s). Provides assistance with forceps and vacuum delivery if needed. Assists with the care of the newborn as needed. Documents identification of the newborn and all observations and procedures. Provides assessment and support of the newly delivery patient (vaginal or Cesarean birth) using knowledge of the physiologic and psychological adaptation during this period. Recognizes deviation from normal and initiates appropriate intervention. Assesses the breastfeeding mother to begin as soon as both are stable and identifies breastfeeding problems and takes appropriate nursing actions. Makes referral to lactation consultant as necessary. Initiates appropriate intervention. Provides ongoing planning and education throughout the hospital stay, to prepare for self care and family adjustment. Assesses the educational needs of the family and identifies barriers to learning. Assesses bonding and promotes positive bonding behaviors. Makes referrals as necessary. Recognizes emergency situations such as precipitous birth, prolapsed cord, ruptured uterus or hemorrhagic disorders and intervenes appropriately.
