GIRMC Staff RN Med-Surg-Lead

Summary

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Manages resources and delegates as appropriate to optimize achievement of unit scope and department objectives. Assists in the operations management of the unit. Promotes retention of staff through recognition and promotion of teamwork within and across shifts. Supports and encourages the professional development of department staff. Ensures optimal patient care standards through daily interaction and role modeling. Supports and facilitates a collaborative relationship between medical staff and hospital staff to ensure that patient needs are met related to equipment, supplies and competent staff available to deliver personalized care. Provides direct patient care in department.

 

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

3. *Supports resolution of patient, family, and physician concerns while promoting patient experience standards and care practices.

4. Utilizes the findings from quality improvement efforts (including HCAHPS/NRC and physician partnership survey scores) to enhance patient care, customer satisfaction (physicians and patients/families) and cost-effectiveness of services.

5. Supports staffing processes including scheduling, timecards, hiring input, and workforce planning.

6. Maintains fiscal responsibility through staffing adjustments and support of budget and capital planning.

7. Works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager to ensure appropriate equipment function, equipment availability and efficient supply usage and charging; maintains a supply and equipment inventory that meets patient care needs.

8. *Ensures staff competence while emphasizing staff retention strategies.

9. *Ensures that existing policies and procedures are adhered to during daily interactions with staff; facilitates patient admissions, discharges and transfers within service line.

10. *Provides education for the patient and family to meet identified patient needs according to their needs, abilities, preferences and readiness to learn.

11. *Documents patient care and related information according to Bryan Medical – GIRMC procedures for documentation.

12. Acts as a champion in EPIC specific to their department. May be asked to help other organizational departments in their use of Epic.

13. *Promotes safety, communication, and accountability through delegation and clear expectations.

14. *Supports the Nurse Manager in communicating and implementing unit or area changes and keeps them informed of daily operational needs and issues.

15. *Supports the preceptor program, new employee orientation, and student programs; communicates education and/or competency needs of staff to the Nurse Manager.

16. * Coaches and mediates staff behavior as needed and communicates with the Nurse Manager if a colleague fails to respond to proper guidance or adhere to standards expected for quality care.

17. *Takes patient care assignments or charge role during volume or acuity changes or during increased staffing demand. This may encompass up to 65% of normal weekly hours.

18. *Assists with record and billing audits to ensure accurate charges and coordinates appropriate vendor support.

19. Evaluates clinical outcomes prior to discharge from current level of care to next level of care; reports and acts on any untoward outcomes observed.

20. *Assists in detecting clinical outdates on equipment, drugs and supplies; acts to correct any deficiencies found.

21. Participates in EPIC meetings for the ClinDoc, advises on changes needed for the department, and implements ClinDoc EPIC changes with the staff.

22. Super user for Smart Square, attends meetings for updates and implements the education with staff.

23. Assists in organizing educational opportunities for all staff.

24. Works occasional rotating shift per staffing needs per department workflows.

25. Meets at least once per 2-week period with orientee to review progress and identify barriers.

26. Participates in committees and supports Unit Based Council initiatives. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

27. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

28. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient’s growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.

2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

3. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

4. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.

5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act required. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and certification in specialty preferred. Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in a department or unit equivalent required. Minimum of three (3) years of Med/Surg or similar (Skilled, LTACH, IRU) experience required.

 

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare

professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required within six (6) months of hire. Credentialed Trainer for EPIC within one (1) year of hire.

Job Description: *Pain Clinic experience preferred* EDUCATION : Associate Degree in Nursing is required. Bachelors Degree in Nursing is preferred.
