We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Charge Registered Nurse (RN) to provide clinical leadership within our Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In this role, you will serve as a frontline leader, coordinating daily operations, supporting staff, ensuring quality patient outcomes, and promoting a culture of safety, collaboration, and professional excellence.
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Nurse Manager and/or Nursing Supervisor, the Charge RN provides operational and clinical leadership for an assigned shift within the Intensive Care Unit. The Charge RN directs, coordinates, and oversees nursing activities, serves as a clinical resource for staff, assists with patient flow and staffing assignments, and supports quality improvement initiatives.
In addition to leadership responsibilities, the Charge RN delivers direct patient care utilizing the nursing process and maintains accountability for patient outcomes in a high-acuity critical care environment.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Provide shift leadership and clinical oversight for ICU nursing operations.
- Coordinate patient assignments, staffing adjustments, and resource allocation to ensure safe and effective patient care.
- Serve as a clinical expert and mentor for nursing staff, providing guidance and support in complex patient care situations.
- Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes.
- Assist with onboarding, orientation, and ongoing development of new nursing team members.
- Support performance improvement, patient safety, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
- Facilitate effective communication during shift handoffs, interdisciplinary rounds, and emergency situations.
- Monitor compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and professional nursing standards.
- Participate in quality assurance activities and departmental projects as assigned.
- Maintain accountability for direct patient care while functioning in a leadership capacity.
Qualifications
Required Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program.
- New hires effective June 14, 2017, must obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution within three (3) years of hire or transfer into the position.
Preferred Education
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
Required Experience
- Minimum of two (2) years of recent acute care nursing experience.
- Previous critical care nursing experience required.
Preferred Experience
- Prior charge nurse, preceptor, leadership, or supervisory experience in a critical care setting.
Licensure & Certifications
Required
- Current Florida Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification upon hire or within six (6) months of hire/transfer, as required by unit standards.
Preferred
- National specialty certification in Critical Care Nursing (CCRN) or related specialty certification.

- Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking abilities in a fast-paced critical care environment.
- Ability to prioritize competing demands and coordinate patient care effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of regulatory standards, patient safety practices, and evidence-based nursing care.
- Proficiency in utilizing patient care technologies and electronic medical record systems.
