Position Summary

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct and indirect patient care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The RN is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care for individuals presenting with a wide range of urgent and emergent conditions. This role requires critical thinking, rapid decision-making, and the ability to prioritize care while maintaining a high standard of patient safety and compassion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and triage using established protocols (e.g., ESI)
  • Initiate and manage emergency nursing interventions based on patient condition and physician orders
  • Administer medications, treatments, and procedures in accordance with hospital policies and scope of practice
  • Monitor and evaluate patient responses, updating care plans as needed
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care
  • Provide rapid response and stabilization for critically ill or injured patients
  • Document all patient care accurately and timely in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions
  • Ensure compliance with infection control, safety standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain readiness of emergency equipment and supplies
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and departmental meetings
  • Serve as a patient advocate while delivering compassionate, patient-centered care

Education and Experience

  • Current, active Florida Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Minimum of 1 year of emergency or acute care experience preferred

Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – Required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – Required or within a specified timeframe
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – Required or within a specified timeframe
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) – Preferred
  • Trauma certification (e.g., TNCC) – Preferred

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced Emergency Department with exposure to high-acuity and trauma patients
  • Frequent exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and emergency situations
  • Requires flexibility, adaptability, and teamwork

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting
  • Ability to lift and move patients (up to 50 lbs. or more with assistance)
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity for clinical tasks
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations
