About the Role
The Nurse Resident is a licensed Registered Nurse enrolled in Howard University Hospital’s Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program, reporting to the Nurse Manager and the Director of Professional Practice & Education. Through structured support and mentorship, you will advance toward independent responsibility for the safe and effective delivery of patient-centered care, building the clinical judgment and confidence that define a successful transition to professional nursing practice.
Over the course of the residency, you will educate patients and families across the continuum of care, develop your practice through feedback and guidance from experienced nurses, and complete an evidence-based practice project. You will exemplify HUH’s values, adhere to the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and grow within a supportive environment designed to launch the next generation of nurses.
What You’ll Do
- Coordinate care for patients and families, and include the patient in care planning and decision making
- Provide patient education throughout the continuum of care and at discharge — including pain management, medication administration, and disease-specific self-management
- Identify knowledge gaps and seek information; formulate relevant questions regarding care delivery for a specific patient or patient population
- Identify subject matter experts and evidence-based resources for referral when necessary, and integrate best current evidence into practice at the bedside
- Build trusting, collaborative relationships with interdisciplinary team members and work collaboratively with the care team to produce positive outcomes
- Use the organizational safety reporting system for near miss and error reporting; adhere to policy and safety measures in the delivery of patient care
- Provide safe patient care using clinical systems correctly, and use electronic resources to support best practices in patient care
- Apply clinical knowledge and reasoning to patient care experiences; incorporate current scientific research and proven techniques into daily practice
- Delegate non-nursing duties appropriately, organize patient care resources to maximize efficiency and effectiveness, and utilize appropriate supplies for each task
- Complete an evidence-based practice project and participate in residency seminars, learning activities, and professional development planning
- Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics, the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct, and HIPAA Privacy policies; attend mandatory compliance and HIPAA training; maintain strict confidentiality of patients, families, and staff
- Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the scope of this role
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program with an Associate’s (ADN), Bachelor’s (BSN), or Master’s (MSN) degree in nursing
- Less than 12 months of RN experience
- Current, active RN license in the District of Columbia required by start date
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required by start date; ACLS, PALS, and/or NRP as required by specialty
- Able to work in a stressful environment with multiple demands; resolve conflicts effectively, prioritize tasks, respond to emergencies, and react calmly
- Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to evaluate care; knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care
- Awareness of common safety hazards and precautions; able to respond to alarms, codes, telephones, and overhead pages
- Able to read charts, labels, documentation, policies, and procedures; able to communicate with staff, visitors, patients, and physicians in clear and concise English

This is a full-time, non-exempt position covered under the DC Nurses Association (DCNA) collective bargaining agreement. Pay range: $37.89 – $63.36/hr, commensurate with experience and qualifications, per the DCNA collective bargaining agreement.
