The Pre‑Operative Care Unit (POC) at IU North offers a collaborative, patient‑centered environment for nurses who thrive on education, interaction, and teamwork. This unit provides med‑surg–level care to both adult and pediatric patients preparing for same‑day surgical procedures, as well as Phase II recovery for same‑day discharges. Nurses work closely with anesthesia, surgeons, OR circulators, and the PACU team to ensure seamless surgical flow and exceptional patient experiences. POC nurses play a vital role in hands‑on patient teaching, delivering clear post‑operative instructions and setting expectations for recovery—resulting in a high level of patient interaction and engagement. With self‑scheduling, no call, and no weekends, this role offers outstanding work‑life balance within a supportive, team‑oriented culture focused on quality, communication, and safe transitions of care.

Hours: 5am-5:30pm (NO CALL, NO WEEKENDS)
Nursing skills gained on this unit:
- Interdisciplinary collaboration with OR nurses, advanced practitioners, surgeons, and anesthesiologists
- Emergency management – BLS, ACLS, and PALS
- Regular patient and family interaction
- Calming pediatric patient before surgery / procedures
Unit Successes/Designations:
- Multiple Daisy nominees and 1 Daisy winner in 2025
- IU North hosted the Indiana Society of Perianesthesia Nursing fall conference in 2025
Unit Culture Highlights:
- Active and engaged professional governance council
- Regular retention activities including peer milestone celebrations, unit activities, and scheduled outings outside of work
- Working regularly with both adult and pediatric patients to calm them and instruct them before and after surgical procedures
Qualifications
- Requires Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Education: The Registered Nurse (RN) must have graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
- Exceptions: Candidates who have not graduated from a nationally accredited program may be considered if they possess more than two years of acute care experience. Such exceptions are subject to review and approval by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
- Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
- Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
- Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
- Other Advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
