Clinical Nursing Student - Emergency Department (ED) - St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital

Job Summary:

The Clinical Nursing Student provides direct patient care under the guidance of the Registered Nurse or designated healthcare professional in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of Bon Secours Mercy Health. The Clinical Nursing Student role is designed to provide clinical experience and exposure through both job shadowing of the Registered Nurse (RN) and provision of care appropriate to scope and at the delegation of the RN.

Essential Functions:

Under direction of the RN, supports the nurse in the application of the nursing process.

  • Works to develop critical thinking skills through collaboration with the RN to ensure quality patient care delivery
  • Seeks out educational opportunities related to nursing practice and critical thinking
  • Provides basic patient care to include, but not limited to, care and comfort, record vital signs, personal care and hygiene, and mobility, including unit based specialty duties. 
  • Acts as liaison between patient and nurse to report changes or concerns to nurse
  • Provides high level customer service to all patients, patient's family, visitors and all employees
  • Provides accurate, precise, timely documentation when applicable for patient care
  • Participates in hand-off/report of pertinent information regarding patient and departmental needs upon arrival and when leaving
  • Performs delegated tasks once competency has been validated
  • Participates in patient data collection and documentation (i.e. vital signs, intake/output, change in patient condition)
  • Performs basic patient hygiene and care related to activities of daily living - assisting with ambulation and patient mobility, feeding, hydration and nutrition and bowel and bladder elimination
  • Utilizes clinical technology as applicable
  • Escalates concerns appropriately through appropriate chain of command

Education:

  • HS/GED (required)
  • Currently enrolled in a nursing program and has completed one clinical nursing course and one clinical rotation (required)

Required Licensing & Certifications:

  • BLS (preferred)

Experience:

  • Recent experience in acute care and/or long term care facility (preferred)

This experience assists the student nurse in expanding previously learned theory and skills through supervised patient care within a work setting. *ST41 is a short-term position. Provides close observation or one-to-one care, as directed by the RN, to prevent patients from wandering or potential injury. Collects, accurately labels and transports specimens to lab as required. Assists with dressing changes, applying splints, setting up suturing and procedures, and wound care on closed wounds as directed by RN. *Cleans, stocks and cares for supplies and equipment in assigned work area. Collaborates with other departments to coordinate exams and treatments, minimizing fragmentation and enhancing patient satisfaction. Assists in collecting specific information from patients and contributes to admission, transfer and dismissal processes when delegated by a RN, and with responsibility for patient assessment being performed by a RN; assures timely reporting and recording of patient's Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Current enrollment and in good standing in a Nursing Program such as an accredited Baccalaureate Nursing Program or RN Associate Degree program required. Active Nebraska Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential required. Six (6) months CNA experience preferred. Patient Care Technicians working primarily in the Emergency Department may have additional competencies specific to their population. OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS: Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required.
