Position Overview:

The QMA is a member of the community nursing team whose responsibility is set up, administer, and record certain prescribed medications for residents in the community under supervision of a licensed nurse and as allowed by state and federal regulatory agencies.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare and administer regularly prescribed oral, eye, nasal, and ear medications to residents. Administrations must be administered safely and documented.

• Prepare and administer topical medications to intact skin.

• Administer PRN drugs, as allowed, when authorized by a license nurse.

• Check physician orders against medication forms.

• Maintain cleanliness and proper storage of all drugs while maintaining a clean working environment.

• Keep medication cart locked while unattended.

• Care for and position all resident tubing and bags as instructed.

• Make rounds and report needs and conditions to the charge nurse as applicable.

• Administer vital signs and document properly.

• Keep medical records current by charting pertinent resident conditions timely and routine charting as scheduled, with co-signature by a licensed nurse.

• Order medications from pharmacy per physician order.

• Use appropriate drug reference if ever unsure or unclear as to drug being administered.

• Count all drugs on Individual Control Drug Records with on-coming charge CTM at shift change.

• Answer call lights, bed/chair sensors, and security care bracelet (if applicable) alarms promptly and courteously.

Qualifications:

• Certified as a Qualified Medication Aide in the state employed; certificate must be active, valid, and in good standing.

• Certified as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the state employed; certificate must be active, valid, and in good standing.

Qualified Medication Aide (QMA)

SUMMARY: The primary responsibility of the Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) is to provide care for the residents under the direction of the nursing and medical staff. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Obtains and records patient's vital signs and weight. Administers and documents medications given by following specifically written physicians orders, including oral, topical, and suppository medications, as well as eye and ear drops. Compliance - Participates in all in-service programs to expand and develop abilities. Maintains compliance to all personnel policies, established community policies and procedures, and Federal and State regulations and standards, including but not limited to HIPAA privacy and confidentiality laws. Understands and implements the Fire Safety and Disaster Preparedness Plan and evacuation procedures of the community during drills and actual emergencies. Performs various treatments not requiring license nurse (hot/cold applications, vital signs, weights, etc.) Uses procedure manual to verify correct techniques and practices standard precautions. Observes, records, and reports observations such as unexpected and untoward effects from medications. Takes vital signs as needed prior to administration of certain medications. Provides direct resident care. Functions as a CNA when not assigned to administer medications. Develops and maintains courteous and professional relationships with residents, visitors, and co-workers. Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor. This dual-certified role ensures the safe and accurate assistance of medications under the direction of a nurse, while also providing direct, hands-on support with activities of daily living to promote dignity, independence, and overall well-being. The CMA/CNA collaborates closely with nursing and caregiving teams to support a person-centered care environment and ensure residents attain or maintain the highest possible physical, mental, and emotional health. This role functions as both a Certified Nursing Assistant and a Certified Medication Aide in accordance with applicable state regulations. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Nurse, assists with medication and provides treatments according to physician’s orders and in accordance with facility policy.
