The UTHealth Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery in Houston is seeking a full-time Staff Nurse to provide patient-centered care and clinical support in a fast-paced surgical specialty practice. This position is based primarily at the Texas Medical Center (TMC) location and will float to the Bellaire clinic approximately one day per week. The ideal candidate will have strong clinical, communication, and care coordination skills, with a commitment to delivering exceptional patient care.

Position Summary:

Functions as a member of collaborative interdisciplinary team providing comprehensive care to patients and families with complex healthcare needs that may be both predictable and unpredictable. Aims to provide care that is safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient and equitable.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Performs responsibilities in a manner that promotes quality patient care and customer service/satisfaction.
  • Adheres to broad scope of practice as established by Nurse Practice Act.
  • Ensures the efficient operation of the clinic or unit by proper scheduling and planning for optimum use of staff and resources, maintenance of stock and supplies, and efficient and safe use of equipment.
  • Uses systematic approach to provide nursing care to patients and families/populations by performing both focused and comprehensive assessments through subjective and evidence based objective data.
  • Prioritizes, synthesizes and documents assessments and nursing plan of care using critical thinking and judgment.
  • Implements plan of care within scope of practice through assignment and monitoring of other nurses and delegation and monitoring of unlicensed staff. Initiates standing orders for prescription refills and labs as well as standing delegation orders where appropriate.
  • Develops and implements teaching plans for patients concerning maintenance, promotion and restoration of health.
  • Evaluates patients' response and outcomes to education and therapeutic interventions. Communicates effectively with collaborative team while escalating critical results and issues in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Exercises judgment while coordinating care and referring patients to agencies or health care professionals for other services/transitions in care where indicated.
  • Performs on site and telephone triage using best practice guidelines and documentation to ensure patients receive the right level of care in the right setting at the right time by the right caregiver using the right equipment and supplies.
  • May be responsible for compiling daily or monthly reports.
  • Acts as a patient and healthcare advocate by maintaining a safe environment and promoting quality healthcare and services.
  • Respects and maintains privacy and confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines.
  • Adheres to standards of practice for professional nursing.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • None
  • Registered Nurse (RN) State Licensure or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) by Texas Board of Nursing (BON) required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) preferred

Minimum Education:

Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in nursing Or Associates Degree in nursing with acceptance or current enrollment in a BSN program and signed agreement Or Technical diploma in nursing with acceptance or current enrollment in a BSN program and signed agreement Or Must be currently enrolled in a nursing bridge program working toward an MSN. Verified BSN-equivalency or a signed agreement is required. Current licensure with the Board of Nursing for the State of Texas or Nurse Licensure Compact BLS certification from the American Heart Association required 9 months of professional nursing experience required EPIC experience highly preferred Responsibilities Uses appropriate evidence-based assessment, complex interviewing techniques and instruments related to ambulatory care nursing in collection pertinent patient, family, or population specific data Develops and continuously updates an individualized plan for patients seeking care for health promotion, health malignance, or health-related situational problems Prioritizes interventions and implements the plan of care in partnership with the patient, family, caregivers, and other health care professionals in a timely manner Conducts a reevaluation and follow-up of care delivered based on the patient’s needs, the patient’s condition, or the patient’s request Incorporates the patient’s families’ and caregiver’s ability to understand and participate in the plan of care Uses ongoing reassessment data to revise the diagnoses, expected outcomes, and implementation of the plan as needed Demonstrates patient advocacy as evidenced in response to patient care issues and collaboration with the health care team About Us Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus is Houston’s first community hospital designed, built and equipped exclusively for children in one of the city’s most rapidly growing communities in the area from Sugar Land to Bryan-College Station, Texas.
