The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a Master's or Doctorate prepared Advanced Practice Nurse, with specialty certification and APRN licensure. In collaboration with the medical staff and nursing staff across UChicago’s oncology service line, the Clinical Nurse Specialist provides clinical leadership and support to develop and improve patient care and outcomes. The Clinical Nurse Specialist elevates the standard of professional nursing practice at UCM by developing, coaching, and mentoring nurses to become expert clinicians and leaders. 

 

Who you are:

A highly motivated and self-starting individual who is comfortable partnering with leaders across departments to lead and drive change elevating the patient experience. 

  • Master's Degree in nursing from an accredited program required; DNP preferred
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years’ experience in inpatient adult oncology care
  • Previous experience in advanced practice role preferred
  • Demonstrates ability to be self-directed
  • Demonstrates clinical competence, effective leadership, and excellent teaching/coaching skills
  • Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain effective communication with personnel across disciplines

What you’ll do as the Clinical Nurse Specialist: 

  • Develop appropriate patient care guidelines or protocols relating to the physical, psychosocial, and developmental needs of adult, and geriatric patients; collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team to educate staff on the utilization of these guidelines and/or protocols; and evaluate the effectiveness of these guidelines or protocols in nursing practice.
  • Identify the expected outcomes of clinical nursing practice, both in general and for specific patient populations; recommend care and operational processes aimed at achieving the defined outcomes; oversee outcomes assessment initiatives.
  • Collaborate with leadership team to develop models of contemporary cost-effective patient care.
  • Influence the development of and compliance with medical center policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Initiate or participate in multi-disciplinary teams to develop and implement programs that focus on patient care issues and outcomes.
  • Assess care team members' abilities to provide patient education and supports the development of the staff in patient education. 
  • Use creative, innovative systems to role model, teach, coach, and/or mentor resource use among nursing staff.
  • Develop and implements patient focused CQI tools which assess and evaluate patient outcomes.
  • Consult with care team members to tailor the delivery of care to meet the diverse needs and strengths of staff members, patients, and families.

Patient centered care principles and professional nursing practice standards provide the foundation for the nurse to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care provided. The staff nurse assumes the primary responsibility and accountability for all patient care personally provided and that provided by those directly under her/his supervision. Essential Job Functions Utilizes appropriate assessment skills to determine patient needs. Develops a plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager or collaborates with the Case Manager to develop a plan of care for specified patients. Oncology Nurse Navigator, Medical Oncology, Full-Time, Day Shift

Join UChicago Medicine, as an Oncology Nurse Navigator in the HHT and Lymphoma at our Hyde Park Campus. The Oncology Nurse Navigator directs the coordination of care for patients with Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) and Lymphoma patients. As an Oncology Nurse Navigator (RN) for the HHT and Lymphoma Teams, you serve as clinical liaison and the single point of contact for patients, coordinating their care as they move from initial diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. You help ensure timely delivery of care and eliminate potential barriers, identify resources, and serve to enhance patient care and the patient experience. In this role, the Oncology Nurse Navigator is responsible for the coordination of all aspects of patient care for this population including education, multidisciplinary referrals, data tracking, diagnostics, determining protocol eligibility, treatment orders, consents and other activities essential to the overall care of the patient. Participates in the conduct of clinical research trials including multi-center cooperative group and intergroup trials, multi-institutional pharmaceutical trials (Phase I, Phase II/III trials), and in-house, Investigator-Initiated trials designed, implemented and coordinated in the Hematology/Oncology Section. Serves as liaison between Attending Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, Primary Investigators, sponsors, patient and family members, clinical research coordinators, referring physicians and community providers, pharmacists, social workers, financial specialists and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
