Summary/Objective

The Medical Assistant provides a variety of patient care activities, clerical duties and accommodative services for all patients.

Essential Job Duties

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  1. Provides an appropriate clinic environment for patient care by maintaining the patient area in an orderly manner and maintaining neatness of the work environment including exam and treatment rooms.
  2. Performs patient care activities within limits of position and under the direct supervision which may include but not limited to vital signs, obtaining height & weight, phlebotomy, and other procedures required for client health screenings.
  3. Assists patient and families with navigation throughout the clinic and with appointments.
  4. Maintains and orders clinic and lab supplies and assists with ordering and maintaining par level supplies as necessary. Includes stocking of the lab, clinic and infusion room areas and proper disposal of waste; as well as, utilizing Standard Precautions to minimize the potential for exposure to infectious processes and disposes of all needles and syringes and or other items used in specimen collection to minimize exposure potential to self and others.
  5. Consistently follows hospital policy regarding verification of patient identification prior to obtaining specimen and ensures specimens are appropriately labeled with patient identifiers, date and time of collection and initials.
  6. Ensures lab charges and patient charges are completed and accurate on a daily basis either in the computer or on paper as indicated in the designated areas.

Required Education and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent.

1-3 years of related experience.

Key Responsibilities Interview patients to gather their medical history and measure vital signs, weight, and height. Accurately record medical history, vital statistics, and test results in electronic medical records. Collect and prepare blood, tissue, or other specimens for lab testing with proper labeling. Assist physicians during patient exams, ensuring all necessary instruments and materials are available. Prepare treatment rooms by maintaining cleanliness and restocking supplies as needed. Clean and sterilize instruments, ensuring safety protocols are followed. Conduct phone consultations with patients regarding test results and health concerns. Perform phlebotomy and other diagnostic tests as required by the provider. Administer medications, including oral, intramuscular, SubQ, and topical, as directed. Ensure detailed and accurate documentation of all patient care activities. Stock exam rooms with necessary supplies, monitor for expired items, and manage waste appropriately. Contribute to OSHA compliance and participate in performance improvement initiatives. Foster a respectful, courteous, and welcoming environment for patients and team members. Collaborate within a primary care medical home model to deliver comprehensive and coordinated care. Attend required safety training programs and adhere to established safety protocols. Maintain work areas and equipment in compliance with Legacy and governmental standards. Report safety concerns promptly and follow exposure control plans as required. Demonstrate proper use of personal protective equipment to maintain a safe work environment. Participate in annual education programs and take on additional duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required BLS/CPR Certification required Up to one year experience Excellent communication skills and customer service skills. Basic front desk, clerical or healthcare support specialist skills/experience Ability to work with clinical staff, works well under pressure, and multitask within a multidisciplinary team Commitment to the concepts of preventive health care and team approach to health care delivery Experience working with computers Experience with Microsoft Office applications. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred Phlebotomy skills preferred Experience with electronic medical records, preferred.
