Responsibilities

A.

JOB KNOWLEDGE

 

 1.  Ensures the safety needs of the patient and the unit are met

*a.  monitors and reports equipment for appropriate corrective action

*b.  monitors environmental safety factors and initiates appropriate corrective action BBP

*c.  attends Fire/Safety, Hazardous Chemicals (optional), CPR course, and Infection Control classes

      *d.  practices infection control as outlined by Universal Blood and Body Precautions Guidelines BBP

 

 2.  Participates in the educational requirements for the unit

*a.  attends and/or is responsible for all information presented at unit level (staff meetings, communication book, memos)

 

 3.  Attends in-service education programs specific to providing care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and/or

      mature adult population as applicable to area of practice.

 

 4.  Has knowledge of and responds to all emergency situations (Code Blue, fire, evacuation, disaster, etc.).

 

 5.  Maintains appropriate PAR levels with stocks as needed (patient supplies, unit clerking supplies)

 

 6.  Collects samples for lab, skin prep, vein punctures, EKG, V/S, file charts, call physician’s office and faxing.

 1.  Uses skills necessary for providing safe and efficient patient care BBP

*a.  observes and promptly reports changes in patient’s behavior or physical condition/emotional status to RN assigned to that patient.

*b.  demonstrates accuracy in performing assigned tasks in timely manner as outlined in job description.

 

 2.  Adheres to the established policies of the facility and the Department of Nursing (i.e., time and attendance, dress code, and confidentiality)

*a.  reports to work on time as scheduled, and promptly returns to work after breaks and meals.

 

 

3.     Shift duties, setup charts, maintain log books, keep charts full of appropriate patient records.

 

4.     Any other duties as assigned by the Charge Nurse

SAFETY/QUALITY

Maintains unit in safe condition as evidenced by cleared hallways, secured electrical wiring, and reporting broken equipment promptly.  Adheres to all facility safety regulations and guidelines regarding patient safety as evidenced by:

 

1.  Attends safety meetings as documented in attendance records.

 

2.  Attends staff meetings where safety issues are discussed.

 

3.  Identifies, corrects and reports unsafe conditions immediately.

 

4.  Takes initiative to provide a safe and clutter-free environment in patient rooms, and keeps work area

     organized.

 

5.  Uses aseptic technique and personal protective equipment as necessary.

 

6.  Complies with hospital policies and procedures.

 

7.  Complies with state/federal rules, regulations, OSHA and JCAHO requirements.

 

Must have the ability to prioritize and function in a high stress environment.  Requires respect for the confidential nature of the work environment.  Requires frequent potential exposure to blood and body fluids.

Qualifications

License or Certification

• Valid BLS card
• Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA

Total Education, Vocational Training, and Experience

• Previous experience in a hospital setting preferred.
  High School Diploma or equivalent
