Job Duties

The Unit Manager is responsible for the day-to-day coordination oversight of all aspects of his/her assigned clinical unit. Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure that required staffing levels are met for each shift on a daily basis needed to render care for the number of residents assigned to her/his responsibility.
  • Make sure that staffing level adjustments are made each shift as needed and the Federal required posted schedule is adjusted to reflect current actual staffing.
  • Attend, participate and lead the weekly resident "At Risk" meeting ensures resident care and condition concerns are identified, interventions are appropriate to cause and follow up is completed.
  • Attend and participate in morning clinical review meeting.
  • Attend and participate in PPS meetings as indicated.
  • Attend and participate in monthly QA and A meetings, as assigned, and assist with follow up for any identified problems.
  • Monitor provision of resident care by licensed nurses and C.N.A.'s ensure required documentation is completed.
  • Review 24- hour resident change in condition report daily ensure necessary follow-up occurs including appropriate interventions implemented, physician and family notified and required documentation has been completed.
  • Review resident medical records and documentation to ensure clinical programs are in place per policy and procedures.
  • Identify educational needs of staff discuss findings with the Facility Educator and work collaboratively to meet these needs.
  • Participate on other committees as requested by the Administrator/Director of Nursing Services.
  • Ensure that resident care and documentation is in compliance with state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Comply with and ensure that staff is in compliance with HIPAA rules and regulations, reporting any known violations to the Administrator and Director of Nursing Services.
  • Ensure work assignments are made for assigned staff, including breaks and lunches and staff is compliant with assignments.
  • Initiate disciplinary action as necessary for staff members in collaboration with DON/ADON.
  • Communicate with the appropriate department manager/DON and participate with follow up and resolution to any grievances/concerns from personnel, residents or family members.
  • Ensure physician orders are being followed.
  • Assist the DON/ADON with preparing performance evaluations as directed. Greet new admissions and families and assist nursing staff with admission process as needed.
  • Within 24 to 48 hours, ensure that all admission documentation is complete including all required clinical assessments and care plans.
  • Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules to ensure that medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Report problem areas to the Director of Nursing. Assist in developing and implementing corrective action.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs to remain current with standards of nursing practice and to maintain licensure requirements.
  • Ensure that your nursing staff follows policy and procedures, including appropriate dress code.
  • Ensure that nursing staff participate in all fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
  • Ensure that nursing personnel are follow established infection control procedures when isolation precautions become necessary.
  • Ensure that all personnel operate nursing equipment in a safe manner.
  • Participate as needed and/or directed in collaboration with the Resident Assessment/Care Plan Coordinator in the development of a written care plan (preliminary, interim and comprehensive for each resident that identifies the problems/needs of the resident, indicates the care to be given, goals to be accomplished and which professional service is responsible for each element of care.
  • Ensure that all nursing care is provided in privacy and that nursing service personnel knock before entering the resident's room.
  • Report and assist with investigation of any allegations of resident abuse including misappropriation of resident property.
  • Assist Social Services with ensuring that an Advance Directive/Code Status has been obtained and documented in appropriate places per policy.
  • Participate in the annual survey and/or complaint survey processes as directed by Administrator/DON and assist as directed with any plans of correction required.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred and/or must be a graduate of an approved RN program.
  • Must be an actively licensed RN in assigned state(s) of employment
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Two years of LTC experience.
  • Acute Care experience preferred.

I. Major Responsibilities: Clinical Practice, Patient Flow, Patient Experience: 1. Leads with high reliability principles framework with goal of zero harm. 2. Is responsible for a positive work environment that is safe for patients, visitors and staff. 3. Accountable for clinical practice and deployment of resources at the unit level to ensure ongoing implementation of nursing process and adherence to standards. 4. Conducts daily patient care rounds, assessing patient care requirements and monitoring nursing & ancillary staff performance to achieve safe, cost effective and quality patient care. 5. Directs the oversight of clinical practice through continuity of nursing assignments to optimize the patient plan of care. 6. Responsible to oversee that the nursing process is being utilized for each patient and a plan of care is established, coordinated, and delivered to each patient and family. Leadership/Management, Human Resources 1. Responsible for appropriate staffing levels, scheduling, hiring, and budgeting. 2. Assesses candidates, through behavioral and peer interviewing, for appropriate positions within the unit and makes recommendations for hire, transfers, promotions and/or other staff changes. 3. Partners with Safety Specialists for orientation of new clinical staff. 4. Provides clinical and administrative oversight of all staff and completion of specific performance reviews. 5. Assures appropriate orientation, competence assessment, in-service training and continuing education for all staff. 6. Ensures the proper documentation for recruiting, on-boarding, evaluating and terminating staff are completed timely and thoroughly. (i.e. position requisition, orientation checklist, separation). Budgetary Planning and Financial Performance 1. Develops annual departmental budgets based on established patient care indicators, projected volumes and patient populations. 2. Maintains cost effective staffing patterns based on department of nursing approved staffing budgets. 3. Maintains master staffing plans, position control and produces monthly staffing schedule aligned with departmental standards. 4. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility via monitoring of salaries and supply expenses, prepares and submits Corrective Action Plans on time and on schedule. 5. Develops capital budgets in collaboration with medical staff for assigned units/areas. 6. Educates staff regarding unit and medical center budgets in order to promote awareness and instill accountability for the financial performance of the unit. Seeks medical leadership and staff feedback on changes that impact such performance. Quality, Safety and Experience Improvements 1. Responsible for VMS safety, quality idea boards on unit. 2. Accountable for the execution of daily and shift safety and clinical care huddles. 3. Rounds on existing and new patients, addressing issues or concerns of patients and/or families on the unit. 4. Responsible for the closure of Safety Intelligence reports and appropriate Corrective Action Plans in place. Responsible for reporting all Serious Reporting Events (SRE) to leadership and provide feedback to staff on results. 5. Links departmental goals to department of nursing/organizational goals and strategic plans. II. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: 1. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with employee currently enrolled in a qualified MSN program. 2. Master’s Degree completion within 5 years of employment at Nurse Manager level. 3. Massachusetts Registered Nurse License. Experience/Skill: Required: 1. Broad and thorough knowledge of the discipline of Nursing. 2. Previous leadership/management experience. 3. Must possess the interpersonal and communication skills to provide effective participative leadership and to interact with patients, families, physicians, and other visitors and staff. 4. Strong analytical skills required to perform various data analysis techniques, review statistical and budgetary information and synthesize information appropriately. Preferred: 1. Minimum 3 years of directly related work experience in the field of specialty. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents. The Nurse Manager is responsible for the operational, clinical, and financial oversight of the Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and the Gannett Unit, a 29-bed Medical-Surgical/Cardiac inpatient unit. This leader will promote high-quality patient care, patient safety, staff engagement, and operational excellence across both areas while fostering a collaborative, patient-centered culture. The Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory provides comprehensive diagnostic cardiac catheterization services and supports the care of patients undergoing cardiac evaluation and treatment. The Gannett Unit specializes in the care of adult medical-surgical patients with a strong focus on cardiac conditions, telemetry monitoring, and post-procedural cardiac care.
