Scope Of Position

UConn Health Waterbury Hospital is seeking an experienced and dynamic Emergency Department Nurse Manager to provide clinical and operational leadership within our Emergency Department. The Nurse Manager will partner with the Director to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, high-quality, and efficient patient care services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This position provides leadership to nursing staff and serves as a key partner to physicians, clinical leaders, and interdisciplinary teams. The Nurse Manager will be responsible for managing unit resources, supporting workforce and staffing needs, promoting patient safety and quality outcomes, and ensuring operations align with the hospital's mission, goals, and objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical and operational leadership for the Emergency Department and ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
  • Manage staffing, scheduling, resources, and daily operations to support 24/7 department needs.
  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop nursing staff while promoting engagement, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Partner with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to promote effective patient care, communication, and patient flow.
  • Monitor quality, safety, regulatory compliance, and patient care outcomes.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, retention, competency development, and performance management.
  • Manage departmental resources responsibly and promote fiscal accountability.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve patient care, efficiency, patient experience, and department performance.
  • Collaborate with the Director and organizational leaders to achieve departmental and hospital goals.
  • Serve as a visible nursing leader and promote a culture of teamwork, professionalism, and patient-centered care.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut or license eligible.
  • BSN or bachelor's degree in a related field required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of acute care nursing experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Current managerial/supervisory experience preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with individuals at all levels of the organization.

Your role, in partnership with the Nurse Director, would be to support the management, budgeting, staffing and patient care this combined ICU. We provide care to patients with a wide range of complex, highly acute medical/neuro issues utilizing a variety of advanced technologies and devices including CRRT, monitoring intracranial pressures, brain tissue oxygenation and hemo-dynamic monitoring. Our patient population include but are not limited to; respiratory failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver injury/failure, kidney injury/failure, sepsis, drug/alcohol withdrawal, stroke, head/spinal cord trauma and brain hemorrhage. RNs in this specialty also must have a family-centered approach because of the critical nature of our patients. We also work closely with our Critical Care Clinicians, Neuro-intensivist, Physician Assistants and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses to provide the highest quality of care for our patients. This position has 24 hour accountability for managing resources (human, material and financial), to ensure quality, cost-effective delivery of patient services for specific patient populations, in a defined area across the continuum. Sign-on bonus available for nurses with 2+ years of ED experience hired into 30hr+, night-shift, positions; $7,500.
