Responsibilities: 

  • Provides professional nurse management and individual care services in a medical detox/residential care program.

  • Provides structured, treatment team meetings daily, with all detox staff on duty to review progress, concerns and changes in treatment, in conjunction with Chief Medical Officer

  • Provides direct supervision of medical and housekeeping staff, including interviewing, hiring and scheduled performance evaluations.

  • Monitors compliance with logging, documentation, tracking and reporting per detox/residential treatment regulations and requirements through DHHS, JC and private insurance.

  • Maintains quality assurance of nursing documentation and individual records.

  • Creates and updates written standard operating procedures and trains staff as necessary.

  • Creates and manages all in-services required by licensing and JC standards as necessary.

  • Supervises and manages nursing care delivery Works with the Chief Executive Officer on assuring safe staffing ratios and nursing coverage.

  • Supervises the medical department to ensure high quality individual care which includes scheduling and training assigned employees, evaluating their performance, developing action plans and implementing corrective action as required.

  • Maintains nursing, residential technician and housekeeping schedules to ensure appropriate staffing levels.

  • Manages and takes inventory of stock medications and supplies.

  • Updates and maintains policies and procedures related to nursing care delivery.

  • Reviews and signs off on nursing documentation as needed.

  • Ability to initiate work independently, flexibility of scheduling for work hours to include on-call responsibilities.

  • If staffing requires, will be responsible to perform duties of the charge nurse, admissions nurse or staff nurse on any shift. 

  • Maintains professional boundaries with clients and interacts with them in an appropriate manner.

  • Collects data on significant adverse medication reactions and significant medication errors and presents data in team meetings.  

  • Institutes performance improvement initiatives within the Nursing/Medical service, identifying opportunities to improve department processes by reviewing incident reports, implementing root cause analyses and instituting departmental corrective action plans when indicated

  • Identifies infection risks and establishes priorities among the risks identified.

  • Sets goals to minimize the possibility of spreading infection and addresses its priority risks.

  • Oversees the operations of the infection prevention, epidemiology, facility hygiene and relevant safety programs.

  • Revises and maintains the organization’s infection control policies and procedures.

  • Oversees cleaning, sterilization and disinfection procedures.

  • Educates, monitors and evaluates hand hygiene protocols amongst staff and clients.

  • Provides infection control education and communications to staff and clients.

  • Responsible for coordinating the infection control program which includes surveillance, analysis of data, developing reports and policies and procedures.

  • Provides orientation and training to staff who perform waived testing.

  • Assesses the competency of staff performing waived testing using two of the following methods: performance of a test on a blind specimen, periodic observation of routine work, monitoring each user’s quality control performance, or use of a written test specific to the test assessed.

  • Establishes a written quality control plan for waived testing that specifies the method(s) for controlling procedures for quality, establishes timetables and explains the rationale for choice of procedures and timetables.

  • Revises and maintains the organization’s waived testing policies and procedures.

  • Routinely audits patient records to assure documentation compliance and opportunities for staff improvement

  • Facilitates weekly Quality Assurance meetings to review Incident reports, follow-ups to previous incident reports and other facility quality/performance improvement initiatives

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

  • 1 year of emergency or med-surge nursing experience required.

  • 2+ years of related clinical experience required

  • 2+ years of supervision experience.

  • Must pass State of Louisiana criminal background and driving record checks.

  • Current certifications in Healthcare Provider BLS/CPR, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens.

  • Knowledge of the federal drug and alcohol confidentiality law (42.C.F.R Part 2) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

  • Knowledge of the Code of Ethics for nurses.

  • Management experience preferred.

  • Must have strong leadership, team building and communication skills.

  • Must be able to physically respond to individuals’ needs in the event of a crisis situation.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills required.

  • Proficient in MS Office and computer systems (e.g. individual management software).

  • Possesses great time management skills needed to meet aggressive deadlines and prioritize multiple tasks.

  • Working knowledge of medical detoxification for substance abuse.

  • Full working knowledge of DHHS and JCAHO regulations governing detox/residential programs.

Schedule physician visits as necessary. • Schedule daily rounds to observe residents and to determine if nursing needs are being met in accordance with the resident’s request. • Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules to verify that medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided, as scheduled. • Provide direct nursing care, as necessary. • Regularly inspect the facility and nursing practices for compliance with federal, state, and local standards and regulations. • Study Infection Control Reports, Medication Incident Reports and Resident Incident Reports for corrective action. • Keep Administrator informed on a daily basis of nursing department functions, recommending changes in techniques or procedures for a more efficient operation. • Promote favorable working conditions and relationships with administration, medical staff, consultants, other departments, residents, family members, volunteers, agencies, and any other individual or group affiliated with the facility. • Review discharge summaries on a timely basis. • Monitor nursing service personnel to verify that they are following established safety regulations in the use of equipment and supplies. • Ensure that all nursing service personnel follow established departmental policies and procedures, including appropriate dress codes • Assure proper handling and emergency care of residents, personnel, and visitors while on the job or in the building. • Assure residents a comfortable, clean, orderly and safe environment. • Comply with, support and enforce Company policies involving all safety and infection control procedures to include the proper use of mechanical lifts and gait belts. • Monitor stock level of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc., to verify they are maintained on premises at all times to adequately meet the needs of the resident. • Create and implement procedures for department equipment to be operated only by trained, authorized personnel in a safe manner. • Develop and implement procedures for nursing supplies to be used in an efficient manner to avoid waste. • Work closely with Central Supply to confirm that changes are made on a timely basis and that inventory is current and medical-nursing supplies are adequate on the nursing stations. • Verify that medical and nursing care is administered in accordance with the resident’s wishes, including the implementation of advance directives. • Assist with development of and approve final version of the Interdisciplinary Plan of Care for each resident in coordination with the physician, Medical Director, nursing staff, and outside consultants (i.e., nursing, dietary, pharmacy, therapists, etc.) and in accordance with corporate, state and federal guidelines. • Confirm accurate completion of forms/reports for the admission, transfer and/or discharge of each resident including, but not limited to, the nursing portion of the PAE, Initial Nursing Assessment, Minimum Data Set (MDS), Resident Care Plan, and the Annual MDS. • Review and verify that documentation procedures for nursing are met according to corporate, state and federal guidelines. • Review nurses notes to confirm that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided, that they reflect the resident’s response to the care, and that such care is provided in accordance with the resident’s wishes. • Review Quality Indicator reports and submit to Vice President of Clinical Services on a monthly basis. • Assist in preparing and planning the nursing service department’s budget and submit to the Administrator for his/her review, recommendations, and/or approval. • Recommend to the Administrator the equipment and supply needs of the nursing department. • Be conscious of cost and attempt to provide quality staff for the nursing department within budgetary constraints. • Participate in monthly QA. • Ensure staffing levels are maintained. • Participate in the facility assessment. • Along with the Administrator engage the medical director in all department activity. • Ensure all department employees have annual performance reviews and competencies timely. Environment: Work will be performed primarily indoors at one of our long-term healthcare facilities, throughout all areas, including in resident rooms, and on carpeted and/or tiled floors. Work will be performed there routinely around other co-workers, healthcare staff, residents, and guests. Due to the nature of facility’s business, worker may be exposed to occasional slippery floors, object on floors, chemicals, sharp objects, hazardous materials and waste (including human), blood borne pathogens, and communicable diseases, as well as high-stress medical and/or life-threatening situations.
