General Purpose:Responsible for supervision of the delivery of care to residents on assigned Unit. Assess resident needs, develop care plans, administer nursing care, evaluate nursing care, and supervise CNAs and other personnel in the delivery of nursing care.

Essential Job Functions:This facility expects their employees to promote an atmosphere of teamwork with other employees and hospitality and comfort for its residents. Therefore, the following list of duties is not all-inclusive:

  • Attend therapy meetings.

  • Complete assessments of residents at admission and discharge from unit.

  • Supervise nursing personnel assigned to the Unit.

  • Document services rendered to residents in Unit for billing purposes.

  • Write admission notes or evaluate admission notes and chart additional essential information.

  • Identify and prioritize primary nursing problems. Place charting profile of prompters in front of chart.

  • Develop care plan addressing immediate nursing problems.

  • Attend weekly meetings, working with therapy and nursing department to optimize reimbursement and make decisions regarding decertification and discharge.

  • Make daily rounds on the unit to monitor resident care and status or residents.

  • Implement care plans for residents on the unit in compliance with physician’s orders.

  • Implement established nursing policies and procedures on the unit, educating nursing support staff according to facility guidelines.

  • Notify resident or legal representative of pending discharge 24 hours in advance.

  • On date of discharge, chart complete discharge summary, to include discharge planning and referrals.

  • Keep complete and accurate record of sign in/out sheets for staffing hours.

  • Assign duties to LPNs and nursing assistants working on the unit, as directed.

  • Work closely with the Director of Nursing in resolving grievances with nursing staff, family members, and residents.

  • Promote favorable working conditions and relationships with the administration, medical staff, consultants, other departments, residents, family members, volunteers, agencies, and any other individual or group affiliated with Unit and the facility.

  • Handle and report disciplinary action that requires immediate attention during your tour of duty in the absence of the Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing and Administrator.

  • Review charting on a weekly basis for accuracy and completeness. Verify that nurses’ charting correlates with what therapy is charting. Document in resident’s chart pertinent information about significant change in resident’s condition.

  • Maintain a safe working environment, complying with infection control and body mechanic procedures.

  • Respond to need for staffing shortages by arranging for replacement staff.

  • Supervise and perform treatments or venipunctures, as needed.

  • Track infection control, exposure control, and resident care trends to provide proactive improvement. Identify areas of concern and offer recommendations and suggestions to the Director of Nursing.

  • Fill in as Charge Nurse when necessary.

  • Audit nursing charges as instructed by Director of Nursing.

  • Inform Central Supply of any supplies that are needed for the Unit.

  • Attend in-service education programs in order to meet facility educational requirements.

  • Be familiar with Standard Precautions, Exposure Control Plan, Fire Drill and Evacuation Procedures and know how to use the information.

  • Maintain confidentiality of resident and facility records/information.

  • Protect residents from neglect, mistreatment, and abuse.

  • Protect the personal property of the residents of the facility.

  • Others as directed by the supervisor or administrator.

  • Registered Nurse with current state license.

  • Excellent technical, assessment and documentation skills.

  • Good leadership qualities.

  • Organized and detailed in work performance.

  • Good communication skills with excellent self-discipline and patience.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) provides care for children with life-threatening illnesses as well as those who are at serious risk for life threatening complications. We care for children from birth to 21 years of age. Patients treated here are experiencing multi-organ system failure, acute and chronic pulmonary conditions, meningitis, septic shock, near drowning, diabetic ketoacidosis, renal and/or hepatic failure, oncology/bone marrow transplant or airway management, among other needs. Major diagnostic categories include respiratory, neurologic, injury/poisoning, trauma, oncologic and infectious disease. The PICU also provides care for patients receiving solid organ transplant as well as neurosurgical, burn, orthopedic, ENT and general pediatric surgical patients. Patients in the PICU are cared for by a multidisciplinary team including pediatric intensivists, RNs and dedicated PICU respiratory therapists, pharmacists, nutritionists, social workers and child life specialists. We provide family-centered care by identifying and addressing the needs of the patient and family throughout their hospitalization. Our esteemed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit recently received the gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the AACN (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses)! There are only 15 PICUs in the nation with this designation, and our hospital on the Anschutz Medical Campus is the only PICU in Colorado that has received this award. Duties & Responsibilities An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. Provides clinical leadership and management, oversees operations, and directs staffing support to ensure high-quality patient care, including serving in charge or other clinical roles, demonstrating clinical expertise, and reinforcing professional standards and competencies. Maintains leader visibility through rounding with patients, families, and team members to assess care delivery, ensure timely resolution of identified issues, promote positive experiences, and recognize best practices. Ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and guidelines, in alignment with evidence-based practice, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards. Ensures safe, efficient patient flow and resource utilization. Creates and manages staffing and scheduling resources to meet patient, operational, and departmental needs, adjusting resources as conditions change. Supports interviewing and hiring decisions, and oversees onboarding and training activities, providing input and recommendations in collaboration with departmental leadership. Develops, coaches, mentors, and directly supervises team members, including directing their work, supporting performance expectations and professional growth, handling employee complaints and grievances, conducting performance reviews, corrective action and discipline, and recommending termination decisions, where needed. Supports continuous improvement initiatives that enhance clinical practice, operations, and patient outcomes. Monitors departmental resources and expenditures and assists with meeting targets for productivity, efficiency, and waste reduction. Provides direct clinical care and support, visible leadership presence, and active supervision of team members. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION – Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Master’s degree in Nursing or a directly related health care field is preferred. EXPERIENCE – Three years of clinical experience. Previous PICU experience strongly preferred. LICENSURE – Registered Nurse (RN) CERTIFICATION(S) – BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire. ANCC recognized certification in clinical specialty. Depending on the unit/department, employees may also be required to have a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Adult Advanced Life Support (ACLS), and/or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC).
