ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The delivery of patient care through the framework of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis and patient outcome) in the postoperative phase of the surgical patient.

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current Registered Nurse License
  • Current American Heart Assn. BLS and ACLS certifications

  • PACU nurse 
  • Demonstrates current, comprehensive professional knowledge and skills in conformance with recognized nursing standards and department policies including the Patient Bill of Rights and JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care and the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Assesses physiological and psychosocial health status of patient.
  • Assesses pain per policy.
  • Completes patient history.
  • Verbally reports pertinent information to appropriate staff to provide continuity of care.
  • Legibly documents information in patient record and signs record using appropriate professional title.
  • Assesses level of understanding and expectations of care.
  • Identifies desired patient outcomes.
  • Establishes nursing diagnosis.
  • Establishes patient/family goals that are mutually acceptable.
  • Formulates Plan of Care for the patient.
  • Implements nursing care plans tailored to patient/family needs.

Assess patient’s preoperative and postoperative status at intervals according to facility or health care organization policies and procedures to include the patient’s cardiovascular system, respiratory system and airway management needs, neurological system, hemodynamic stability, pain and comfort needs, and mental status. Interpret information accurately from various noninvasive and invasive monitors. Describe the underlying pathophysiology of commonly encountered disease processes. Describe the physiology associated with various anesthesia techniques and surgical or procedural interventions. Apply the relevant scoring system/discharge criteria for patient transfer ( e.g. , Aldrete Score, Modified Aldrete Score [ i.e. , PARSAP], Post Anesthesia Discharge Scoring System [PADSS], White) score accurately as defined by organizational policy. Develop an individualized perianesthesia plan of care. Implement the plan of care including the following interventions: Preparing for and managing patient recovery from anesthesia – general. May be exposed to infectious diseases. Will be exposed to physical, mental and emotional illness as well as end of life conditions and death. Moderate stress and risk of injury from patient care. Standing/walking for more than half of the day. Frequently bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting and lifting. Must be able to assist pushing/pulling/lifting patients ranging from five (5) to three hundred (300) pounds. Additional Information Monday-Friday, no weekends, holidays or on call requirements. ACLS & BLS required, PALS preferred. PACU or critical care experience required. Must have strong clinical skills, critical thinking, work as a team player and allow for flexibility in work schedule.
