The Unit Assistant will perform duties as a team member, communicating with all hospital departments. Assists nurses in carrying out physicians' orders. Under the supervision of the registered nurse, assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic care to patients, assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment, & performs accuchecks and EKG's as ordered by the physician or LIP. The unit assistant demonstrates the ability to provide clerical support and reception duties to enhance the delivery of patient care when needed. This will include: registering patients on the computer using Meditech, placing orders on the computer & working with the Materials Management Department to ensure the department is stocked at all times with supplies. The unit assistant demonstrates the ability to work under pressure and in situations that demand patience, tact, stamina, and endurance. The age category of the patients this incumbent has regular contact with includes neonatal (1 day - 28 days) through old age (85 yrs. - death). Assumes other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements: May be expected to lift up to 50 pounds or up to 150 pounds with assistance. May be expected to push or pull 500 pounds with assistance. Work is of medium demand; walking or standing most of the time while on duty. Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity are essential to performing the designated duties required. Optimal auditory acuity is required. Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments or needles is essential to performing assigned duties.
