Driscoll Children’s Hospital is seeking a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner to join our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) team.

The Nurse Practitioner provides specialized care to children with complex acute, critical, and chronic conditions. Working collaboratively with pediatric intensivists and the interdisciplinary care team, this position assesses patients, develops and implements treatment plans, coordinates care, and supports patients and families throughout hospitalization and discharge.

Responsibilities

Provide specialized care to children with complex acute, critical, and chronic conditions in the CICU.
Perform and document comprehensive patient histories, physical examinations, and ongoing clinical assessments.
Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care in collaboration with the supervising physician and interdisciplinary care team.
Write appropriate orders for medications, nursing care, laboratory testing, imaging, and other diagnostic or therapeutic services within the approved scope of practice.
Review and interpret laboratory results, imaging studies, vital signs, and other clinical data.
Initiate appropriate interventions and communicate significant findings or changes in a patient’s condition to the supervising physician.
Request consultations, referrals, additional testing, or medical interventions as clinically appropriate.
Complete consultation notes, progress notes, and other required documentation accurately and within established timeframes.
Coordinate continuity of care throughout the patient’s hospitalization.
Collaborate with physicians, clinical staff, patients, and families to identify anticipated discharge needs and coordinate follow-up care.
Provide and document patient and family education, including discharge instructions.
Serve as a clinical resource for nursing staff and other members of the care team.
Participate in PICU- and CICU-based conferences, committees, quality initiatives, and the development of clinical practice standards.
Serve as a liaison and advocate for high-risk patients, children with complex or chronic healthcare needs, and their families.
Collaborate with research personnel on approved research projects and data collection, as applicable.
Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
Follow hospital policies, clinical standards, regulatory requirements, and corporate compliance guidelines.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Master’s or Post Master’s Degree, required.
Graduation from a Nurse Practitioners Program with practice authority in the State of Texas, required.
Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Acute Care (CPNP-AC), required.
Active and unencumbered nurse practitioner and registered nurse license in the State of Texas, required.
Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications, required.
Minimum of 2-3 years of pediatric critical care experience, recommended.
Must complete and maintain Driscoll Children’s Hospital credentialing, medical staff membership, and appropriate clinical privileges.
Must complete and maintain all specialty courses and continuing education required by Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) provides state-of-the-art critical care to children with congenital and acquired heart disease. We also care for adults with congenital heart disease in the immediate post-operative period. We care for more than 750 patients each year. Our CVICU is currently a 29-bed unit with plans to expand to 36 beds in the next few years. We are a post-surgical and cardiac medical unit. Our Pediatric Heart Transplant program is complemented by the Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Therapies (PACT) program. PACT provides artificial circulatory assist devices as alternatives to or bridges to transplant. These include ECMO, the Berlin Heart and Heart Mate.
