Horizon Health is seeking an Admissions Manager (RN/Registered Nurse) of Behavioral Health to join our team at Abbeville General Hospital in Abbeville, LA. This is a 16 bed inpatient psychiatric unit treating ages 18+.
The Behavioral Health Admissions Manager is responsible for overseeing the admissions process for behavioral health services, ensuring timely, accurate, and compassionate intake of patients seeking treatment. This role provides leadership to the admissions team, coordinates clinical and administrative admission workflows, and supports safe, appropriate patient placement based on medical and behavioral health needs.
This position requires a strong background in registered nursing (RN) and behavioral health admissions, with responsibility for performing and/or overseeing clinical admission assessments, determining appropriateness for admission, and supporting compliance with organizational, regulatory, and quality standards.
Core Functions
- Lead and manage the behavioral health admissions process from initial inquiry through patient placement.
- Supervise admissions staff and ensure efficient, customer-focused service.
- Perform and oversee clinical admission assessments and triage decisions.
- Ensure admissions decisions align with medical necessity, level of care criteria, and organizational policy.
- Coordinate communication among referring providers, families, emergency departments, and internal clinical teams.
- Support regulatory compliance, documentation accuracy, and quality improvement efforts.
- Promote a safe, therapeutic, and compassionate admission experience for patients and families.
Responsibilities:
Admissions Operations
- Oversee daily admissions workflow and ensure timely patient processing.
- Review incoming referrals, inquiries, and transfer requests for appropriateness and urgency.
- Coordinate bed placement and admission decisions in collaboration with clinical and operational leaders.
- Monitor admissions volume, throughput, and workflow efficiency.
- Ensure proper documentation and tracking of admissions activities.
Clinical Admissions / RN Duties
- Perform clinical admission screenings and assessments consistent with RN scope of practice.
- Collect and evaluate patient information including psychiatric history, medical history, presenting symptoms, medications, risk factors, substance use history, and current level of functioning.
- Assess for suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, self-harm risk, withdrawal risk, behavioral instability, and medical acuity.
- Determine clinical appropriateness for admission and recommend level of care based on assessment findings and established criteria.
- Collaborate with physicians, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and interdisciplinary teams regarding admission decisions.
- Identify patients requiring higher acuity care, medical clearance, or transfer to a more appropriate setting.
- Ensure completion of nursing admission documentation, clinical screening forms, and required assessment records.
- Support safe transition of patients from referral source to inpatient or appropriate behavioral health services.
Team Leadership and Supervision
- Supervise, train, and evaluate admissions staff to ensure consistent performance and adherence to standards.
- Provide coaching, feedback, and support to team members.
- Develop staff schedules and coverage plans to support 24/7 or extended-hour admissions operations, as applicable.
- Assist in resolving complex admission issues and escalated concerns.
Communication and Coordination
- Serve as a liaison among patients, families, referral sources, emergency departments, and internal departments.
- Communicate admission status, documentation requirements, and placement updates clearly and professionally.
- Facilitate timely handoff of relevant clinical and administrative information to the receiving care team.
- Support a customer-service-oriented admissions experience while maintaining clinical integrity.
Compliance and Quality
- Ensure admissions processes comply with federal, state, accreditation, and organizational requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality and protect patient information in accordance with HIPAA and related regulations.
- Participate in audits, performance improvement initiatives, and quality reviews related to admissions.
- Identify process gaps and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency, safety, and patient satisfaction.
Performs other duties as assigned/required by this position.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred
- Active and unrestricted RN license required
- 3 – 5 years of related work experience
- CPR, BLS, and ACLS certifications required
- BH, psychiatric nursing, or related specialty certification preferred
- Previous experience in behavioral health admissions, clinical screening, or utilization review strongly preferred.
- Experience working with patients experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms, substance use disorders, or co-occurring disorders preferred.
- Working knowledge of behavioral health diagnoses, psychiatric medications, and risk assessment.
- Strong documentation and regulatory compliance skills
- Strong leadership, coaching, and team coordination abilities.
