Registered Nurse (Experienced) - Peds Transplant & Cellular Therapy - Full Time Nights

Location: 2301 Erwin Rd, Durham, NC 27710

The Peds Transplant & Cellular Therapy unit, DCT 4A, is comprised of 17 beds and serves a blended patient population of pediatric transplant, cell therapy and general pediatric oncology, with an emphasis on high-risk oncology. Our team is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time.

The DCT 4A team cares for oncology and sickle cell patients, as well as patients with metabolic and genetic disorders. Nurses in this unit work as part of a multidisciplinary team and have the opportunity to participate in rounds on their patients. Nursing care is patient- and family-centered, with primary nursing teams delivering care alongside members of various other disciplines. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:1 or 1:3, depending on acuity, and the unit is staffed with a free-standing charge nurse and Health Unit Coordinator 24/7.

Schedule:

  • Full-time nights: Three 12-hour shifts, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., 36 hours per week.

How you will make an impact

  • Independently plan, provide, supervise and document professional nursing care using the nursing process in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.
  • Use professional nursing judgment to individualize the plan of care based on each patient’s baseline needs and response to care.
  • Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the registered nurse as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist nursing personnel in delivering care and serve as a team leader or charge nurse for a group of patients or an entire unit, as assigned.
  • Monitor the environment of care and initiate corrective action involving equipment and material resources.
  • Maintain required competencies, identify learning needs, participate in professional development, act as a preceptor and support the development of staff and formal learners.
  • Participate in clinical and operational performance improvement activities and perform other related duties incidental to the work described.

What you will need

  • Graduation from an accredited BSN program.
  • Registered nurses hired between July 1, 2014, and April 11, 2021, without a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher are encouraged to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date but must complete the program within seven years of their start date. Registered nurses hired before July 1, 2014, are not required to enroll in a BSN program to remain in this job classification.
  • Twelve months of appropriate clinical experience required.
  • Current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina required.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing required.
  • Knowledge of the scope of practice for registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and unlicensed staff, as well as professional nursing theory, practice, procedures and the appropriate application of the nursing process.
  • Ability to assess the nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families, independently seek resources and work collaboratively.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships, communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors and healthcare professionals, and provide education in accordance with the nursing plan of care.
  • Ability to process and prioritize information, treatments and follow-up using sensory, cognitive and fine motor skills while remaining focused and organized.
  • Ability to record activities and document assessments, plans of care, interventions, evaluations and reevaluations using computer or paper documentation tools.
  • Ability to use computers, learn new software programs and navigate the healthcare environment to provide clinical care.
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques used to administer routine and specialized treatments, infection-control procedures, safety precautions and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking and meet specialized life-support requirements designated by the work area.

Use professional nursing judgment to individualize the plan of care based on assessment of the patient's baseline needs and response to care. Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers. Assist other nursing personnel in the delivery of nursing care and act as team leader or charge nurse for a group of patients or an entire unit as assigned. Monitor and initiate corrective action to maintain the environment of care including equipment and material resources. Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings. Act as preceptor and support the development of other staff and formal learners. Participate in the identification of clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and in performance improvement activities. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Job Eligibility Requirements: Work requires graduation from an accredited BSN or Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program. Exception: Registered nurses hired between July 1, 2014 and April 11, 2021 without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) are expected to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date but must complete the program within seven years of their start date. Registered nurses hired before July 1, 2014 are not required to enroll in a BSN program to remain in this job classification. Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. If candidate has another compact state RN license, NC state licensure must be obtained within 90 days of hire BLS and ACLS is required. Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking during 10hr shift with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds. Previous experience in an infusion care setting preferred Experience with Epic preferred or other computerized charting system preferred Job Schedule: The schedule for this position is weekday 4-10 hour day shifts with 1 Saturday per month.
