Summary:

The Peri-anesthesia Nurse in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) delivers specialized nursing care to patients recovering from various surgical procedures. This role utilizes critical thinking skills. The PACU RN develops and implements a care plan focused on the patient’s safe recovery from anesthesia. The PACU RN collaborates closely with anesthesia professional, manages pain and stabilizes vital post-operative parameters to ensure effective recovery. Care is tailored to the patient’s age, surgical procedure, and anesthesia type, with thorough reinforcement of procedure-specific discharge instructions to patients, families, and/or significant others. Call after working hours on departmental rotating basis.


Responsibilities:

Plays a vital role in ensuring a safe and comfortable recovery for patients in the post-anesthesia phase, contributing to the overall success of the surgical process through attentive and specialized care.

Observes and monitors post-operative patients' levels of consciousness and overall status during recovery from anesthesia.

Measures and records vital signs to assess patients’ recovery progress.

Observes for and addresses any signs of side effects from anesthesia medication. Manages and treats post-operative symptoms, including pain and nausea.

Updates and maintains accurate charts, patient files, and medical records.

Collaborates with the medical team to coordinate post-operative care and facilitate timely specialized interventions.

Provides comfort and reassurance to patients and their families, addressing any concerns and answering questions.

Educates patients and their families about post-surgery care and discharge.
