Major Responsibilities:

  • Uses the nursing process to assess the needs of the patient, plan and implement individualized interventions and evaluate the effectiveness of the plan of care. Includes the patient and family in planning and implementing care and develops and maintains a therapeutic relationship throughout the healthcare continuum.
  • Anticipates and recognizes significant changes in the patient’s condition, status, and need for care. Provides ongoing assessment of the patient and takes appropriate actions when changes occur. Anticipates and alters the plan of care as needed, mobilizes appropriate resources, and collaborates with other health care team members to coordinate patient centered care.
  • Implements strategies to reduce patient risk and increase patient safety. Assesses patient and family readiness to learn and individualizes the approach as necessary. Works collaboratively to develop strategies to meet the learning needs of the patient and family.
  • Actively coordinates the discharge plan utilizing an interdisciplinary approach. Applies evidence-based practice to deliver patient care. Consistently incorporates nursing and regulatory standards of care into practice.
  • Provides ongoing evaluation of patient, team, and unit outcomes and is empowered to take appropriate action when changes are needed. Supports shared governance activities and initiatives to improve processes and patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills. Promotes collaboration among healthcare team members. Assumes a leadership role in the care team and delegates appropriately to unlicensed personnel.
  • Promotes a culture of safety through identifying threats to patient safety and intervening to prevent patient harm. Reports patient safety events and near misses in a timely manner. Seeks to identify potential safety issues and assists in the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Applies ethical decision making, demonstrates respect and understanding for peers, and other clinical disciplines. Participates as an effective member of the patient care team to formulate an integrated, unbiased, individualized approach to care.

  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices, and
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).


Education Required:

  • Completion of an accredited or approved program in Nursing.


Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 1 year of experience in clinical nursing.

Clinical Nurse Educator - Department Based - CVICU

Hourly Pay Range: $38.16 - $59.15 - The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors. Position Highlights: Position: This full-time position is a dual role of 0.5 FTE in the Clinical Nurse Educator - Department based role supporting ongoing staff development and 0.5 FTE in the RN role supporting unit staffing in the CVICU. (Salary Range for RN role is $36.00-$55.80). Location: Glenbrook Full Time (40 hours/week) Educator Hours: Monday – Friday; Days & Evenings coverage required based on department needs. Day shift can start as early as 5 am. Evening shift starts at 3 pm. 40 hours per pay period structured as two 8-hour shifts one week and three 8-hour shift the alternate week. RN Hours: Sunday-Saturday; hours based on unit needs; rotating holidays A Brief Overview: A Clinical Nurse Educator – Department Based is a nurse with prior clinical experience who may or may not have previous educational experience, and whose primary focus is staff development and nursing education. Reporting to the Director of Nursing Professional Development and Practice and working in collaboration with the unit manager. The Clinical Nurse Educator – Department Based elevates professional nursing practice by developing, coaching, and mentoring nursing staff. They also maintain clinical proficiency by providing direct patient care, precepting, and delivering bedside “just-in-time” education to nursing staff. What you will do: This role includes providing direct patient care. Acts as a clinical resource to staff; maintains visibility in the clinical environment for just in time learning facilitation and/or assisting in providing direct patient care Flexibility in scheduling to accommodate providing educational activities at various times of the day and various days of the week. Serve as a clinical mentor and role model for new and existing staff. Collaborates with Clinical Nurse Manager to assess education and performance needs of staff. Serve as a resource to Clinical Managers/Clinical Coordinators in defining education and performance needs of staff. Supports the role transition, role integration, skill acquisition and mastery as nursing staff advance from novice to expert. Assists in the development and implementation of unit/service line/area based competency requirements for nurses and patient care technicians Facilitates the onboarding of employees to ensure integration to the role on both unit and system-wide levels, focusing on retention and growth for licensed and unlicensed team members. Manage education and training processes/activities to foster learning using strategies that engage learners in critical inquiry, critical thinking, problem solving, and foster the development of competence in learners. Precepts registered nurses new to the department. Mentors and evaluates preceptors to enhance learning experiences for all new hires. Evaluates orientation and onboarding experiences to ensure newly hired team members are prepared to practice safely and independently. Organizes and acts as a resource for on unit in-services for new products, equipment, policies/procedures/practice. In collaboration with Clinical Nurse Manager, partner with staff to lead unit council development and participation in shared decision-making councils. Partners with Clinical Nurse Manager to drive unit safety, quality outcomes and patient experience. Promote a positive and professional climate and provide resources for learning that facilitate the life-long learning process. Support and promote specialty certification preparation. Demonstrates knowledge of effective communication principles and promotes communication among disciplines Performs other duties as assigned. What you will need: Education: Bachelor’s Degree in nursing required or Diploma Degree in Nursing and Bachelor’s Degree in Health-Related Field. Masters Degree in Nursing preferred. Certification: Current Professional Nursing Licensure in the State of Illinois. Current nursing specialty certification; if no specialty nursing certification, certification required within one year of assuming role. Current Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and/or Neonatal Resuscitation as applicable to role. Experience: At least five years of clinical experience in a medical center, hospital environment or academic setting. Unique or Preferred Skills: Adult learner knowledge and expertise. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Flexibility in work schedule. Able to effectively interact with colleagues and all members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to engage in dialogue with diverse healthcare audiences. Commitment to teamwork; ability to work with others to set and accomplish goals through collaboration and coordination. Possesses presentation skills necessary to provide education to audiences. Commitment to continued personal professional development as evidenced by attendance at seminars, conferences, maintaining specialty certification, etc. Proficiency in a variety of computer programs (Microsoft Office – Word, Power Point, Excel) Computers and proficiency in virtual meeting platforms. Ability to conduct literature searches to investigate best practices, evidence-based practices, and/or research studies. Specific Applications: Workday.
