Registered Nurse (RN) Outpatient Infusion – RWJBarnabas Health

The Oncology Infusion Registered Nurse provides safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to adult oncology and hematology patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, hydration, injections, and other infusion treatments. The RN assesses patients before, during, and after treatment; promptly identifies changes in condition; educates patients and families; and collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to coordinate high-quality care.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), a typical day may include:

  • Conducting comprehensive patient assessments and recognize subtle clinical changes, using your judgment to intervene early and advocate for your patients
  • Providing safe, evidence-based medications, treatments, and hands on care grounded in strong clinical judgment
  • Serving as a clinical partner to physicians and advanced providers, offering insight that supports timely, well-coordinated care decisions
  • Providing clear, compassionate education to patients and families so they feel informed, supported, and prepared for the next phase of care
  • Ensuring accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record to promote continuity and patient safety
  • Contributing your voice during interdisciplinary rounds, helping drive seamless communication and smooth transitions of care

  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments before, during, and after infusion treatments
  • Verify treatment plans, provider orders, laboratory results, medication dosages, treatment parameters, allergies, and required authorizations before administering therapy
  • Safely administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, blood products, hydration, injections, and supportive medications according to organizational policies and accepted oncology standards
  • Independently perform double-checks and follow all medication-safety procedures
  • Access, assess, maintain, and de-access implanted ports and other central venous access devices
  • Initiate and manage peripheral intravenous lines as appropriate
  • Monitor patients for infusion reactions, medication side effects, hypersensitivity reactions, and changes in clinical condition
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to oncologic emergencies and infusion-related complications
  • Provide symptom-management guidance related to pain, nausea, fatigue, dehydration, infection risk, and treatment side effects
  • Educate patients and caregivers about treatment plans, medications, possible side effects, infection precautions, and when to contact the healthcare team
  • Provide emotional support and promote a compassionate, patient-centered experience,
  • Support efficient patient flow and proper utilization of infusion chairs while maintaining safe staffing and treatment practices
  • Participate in daily huddles, patient rounding, quality-improvement activities, accreditation readiness, and department meetings
  • Follow infection-prevention standards, hazardous-drug handling requirements, and appropriate personal protective equipment procedures

To be considered for this RN opportunity, you must hold an active New Jersey Registered Nurse license in good standing or Multistate RN License with NJ Endorsement and a current American Heart Association BLS certification. A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is strongly preferred, as is prior patient care experience and comfort with electronic medical record systems (EMR) like EPIC. Current Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy Certificate. Oncology Certified Nurse credential Previous oncology, hematology, infusion, or medical-surgical nursing experience. Experience administering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, and supportive infusion therapies. This position offers a consistent of being full-time day schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and every other weekend required. Schedule during the week will vary depending on department needs, allowing you to build strong patient relationships while maintaining balance.
