Responsibilities & Requirements

The Lead Medical Assistant supports high-quality patient care and efficient clinic operations by performing advanced clinical and administrative duties while guiding and training Medical Assistants within the team. This role ensures compliance with regulatory standards, coordinates daily workflows, and serves as a resource for clinical and operational questions. Performs other duties as assigned. All job responsibilities are to be carried out in alignment with Kettering Health's mission, vision, values, and B Safe program.

 

Required Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 

Required Work Experience

  • At least 1 year of experience as a Medical Assistant or in a similar clinical support role. 

Required Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire. 

Skills 

  • Proficiency in clinical procedures and patient care techniques
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Ability to train and guide others
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and OSHA regulations
  • Basic computer and electronic health record (EHR) skills

Essential Functions 

  • Lead daily clinical operations by coordinating patient flow, prioritizing tasks, and ensuring timely care delivery.
  • Guide, train, and serve as a resource for Medical Assistants and other support staff, providing informal feedback and instruction.
  • Perform clinical duties such as obtaining vital signs, preparing patients for exams, assisting providers during procedures, and administering medications as permitted by law and policy.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens, ensuring accurate labeling and documentation.
  • Maintain and ensure the cleanliness, sterilization, and readiness of medical instruments and exam rooms.
  • Monitor inventory of medical supplies and medications, initiating orders and restocking as needed.
  • Support administrative processes, including scheduling, documentation, and responding to patient inquiries.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, infection control protocols, and organizational policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and safety programs as assigned.
  • Document all patient care activities accurately in the electronic health record (EHR) in accordance with privacy and security standards. 

Leadership Capabilities 

  • Guide and train Medical Assistants and support staff in clinical and administrative procedures.
  • Coordinate daily workflow and prioritize team tasks to support efficient clinic operations.
  • Serve as a resource for clinical questions and escalate issues to supervisors or providers as needed.
  • Support onboarding and orientation of new Medical Assistants.
  • Contribute informal feedback on team performance and participate in peer evaluation processes. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Experience in a lead or supervisory capacity within a healthcare setting.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant from a nationally recognized organization (e.g., AAMA, AMT, NHCA).
