Emergency Department Registered Nurse RN

$37.08 - $55.62 / hour

Job Summary: PRN

The registered nurse is a professional practitioner who delivers patient care through the nursing process.

Functions and Duties:

  • Collaborates with the patient, family and healthcare team to promote positive patient outcomes
  • Assess and reassess patient clinical condition, which includes objective and subjective assessment data.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate a patient’s Plan of Care.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills for patient care and daily operations. 
  • Demonstrates clinical competencies and skills applicable to unit.
  • Coordinates, initiates, and validates teaching based on identified learning needs of the patient and designated support person.
  • Manages, administers and reconciles medications. 
  • Documents patient care, interventions and responses in the electronic health record (EHR) timely and accurately.
  • Delegates appropriately according to skill level.
  • Triage according to the ESI triage algorithm.
  • Manage sexual assault victims care, paperwork and evidence.
  • Medication management including Omnicell and refrigerator monitoring.
  • Facilitate patient flow.
  • Prioritize and delegate tasks related to patient care.
  • Clear communication with First Responders in the Community (EMS).
  • Knowledge of role in codes including but not limited to:
    1. Inside Response Team
    2. Outside Response Team
    3. Code Blue in ED
    4. Code Blue in house
    5. Code Blue on grounds
    6. Express Team
    7. Code Green including the function of the Decon Room
    8. Other hospital codes
  • Clear and sensitive communication with patients and families who are dealing with various stages of trauma and tragedy.
  • Management of an expired patient including but not limited to:
    1. Coroner notification
    2. M transplant notification
    3. Funeral home notification
    4. Morgue placement
    5. Patient belongings
    6. Family physician notification
    7. Police if required
  • Safe management of Behavioral Health patients in acute crisis.
  • Transfer management per EMTALA guidelines.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.

Experience

  • Greater than one (1) year of working experience in a similar unit with comparable patient acuity is preferred.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

  • BLS certified required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 1 year of hire
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or equivalent within 1 year of hire 
  • De-Escalation training within 6 months of employment.
  • Current Illinois RN State licensure required.

Skills and Abilities

  • None.

Physical Demands:

  • Sit or stand for a prolonged period of time
  • Regularly exposed to body fluids with the risk of bloodborne pathogens or airborne pathogens
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) (mask, gown, gloves) when required.

Lifting/transferring

  • Able to lift 25 pounds from floor to waist using proper body mechanics
  • Able to transfer or position clients greater than 50 pounds with assistance or assistive devices
  • Requesting assistance is expected 

Pushing/pulling

  • Required in positioning and moving clients and medical equipment. Pushing required performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Stooping/kneeling/reaching

  • Considerable twisting, bending, stooping, kneeling and reaching during many aspects of clients care (bathing, making beds, setting up and monitoring medical equipment)

Motor coordination and manual dexterity

  • Able to use one or both hands for grasping, pushing/pulling and fine maculation to perform procedures

Tactile sensation

  • Able to feel vibrations, temperature changes and pulses

Eyesight/vision

  • Near acuity: clarity of vision at 20 inches or less; with 20/40 vision or better with or without correction.
  • Far acuity: clarity of vision at 20 feet or more; with 20/40 vision or better with or without correction
  • Able to accurately read labels and prepare medications. Read written communication and monitor medical equipment findings.

Temperament

  • Ability to adapt to continually changing environment 
  • Able to accept constructive criticism and accept own limits
  • Emotional and mental stability needed to maintain a therapeutic relationship with clients, families and health team members.

Hearing

  • Must be able to hear a forced whisper at 5 ft.

Practical Nursing Instructor (Founding Faculty) About the Opportunity A well-established, career-focused school is opening a new campus in the St. Louis Metro East area and bringing its Practical Nursing (PN) program there. The school has helped students start healthcare careers for more than 30 years. It is still privately owned and run, and this growth brings that experience to a new community. The school is hiring one of the first instructors for the new campus. You will help start the program, teach and mentor the first group of LPN students, and set the tone for every class that follows. This role suits a nurse educator who likes starting new things and wants to help shape a program's culture, standards, and student experience. What You'll Do Classroom and Lab Teaching. Plan and teach lectures and hands-on skills labs for the first class, and create an encouraging, engaging place to learn. Testing and Feedback. Write, give, and grade exams and skills checks. Give students useful feedback so they are ready for clinicals and the NCLEX-PN. Clinical Supervision. Supervise students at local hospitals and care sites, and build strong relationships with those clinical partners. Curriculum Delivery. Teach from an established curriculum and suggest changes that fit the new campus and its students. Keep the program in line with Illinois nursing and higher education rules. Student Mentoring. Advise and support the first students as they move through the program, and help create the habits and support systems that lead to student success. Online Course Tools. Use the school's online learning platform to post course materials, track grades and progress, and stay in touch with students. Required Qualifications State and accreditation rules require a BSN for this faculty role.
