Position Overview

Aspire Senior Living Pleasant Hill is seeking an experienced, compassionate, and results-driven Director of Nursing (DON) to lead our nursing department.

The Director of Nursing serves as the clinical leader of the community and is responsible for providing leadership, oversight, and direction to nursing operations while ensuring the delivery of high-quality, person-centered resident care.

The DON partners closely with the Administrator, nursing leadership, physicians, healthcare providers, and interdisciplinary team to promote clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, positive resident outcomes, employee development, and a strong culture of safety and accountability.

We're looking for an RN leader who can develop strong nursing teams, lead by example, and keep residents at the center of every clinical decision.

What You'll Do

Nursing Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for the nursing department.

  • Recruit, hire, orient, supervise, mentor, and develop nursing team members, including RNs, LPNs, CNAs, CMTs, and other nursing personnel.

  • Partner with the ADON and other nursing leaders to maintain effective nursing operations.

  • Establish clear expectations and promote accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and open communication.

  • Support employee retention by fostering a positive and collaborative nursing culture.

  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, recognition, and professional-development opportunities.

  • Serve as a visible and accessible clinical leader for residents, families, and employees.

Resident Care & Clinical Excellence

  • Oversee the delivery of high-quality nursing care consistent with professional standards, resident care plans, and applicable requirements.

  • Promote person-centered care that supports each resident's physical, emotional, psychosocial, and clinical needs.

  • Monitor resident conditions, clinical outcomes, and changes in health status.

  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, Pharmacy, Therapy, Social Services, Dietary, and other interdisciplinary partners.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of individualized resident care plans.

  • Promote effective communication regarding changes in resident condition and clinical concerns.

  • Review clinical outcomes and identify opportunities to strengthen resident care and safety.

Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement

  • Provide leadership for nursing-related Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities.

  • Monitor clinical quality measures, trends, incidents, and other performance indicators.

  • Conduct or oversee clinical audits, investigations, and root-cause analyses as appropriate.

  • Develop and implement performance-improvement initiatives designed to strengthen clinical outcomes.

  • Monitor corrective actions to help ensure improvements are sustained.

  • Promote evidence-based practices and continuous improvement throughout the nursing department.

Regulatory Compliance & Survey Readiness

  • Ensure nursing operations comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and professional standards.

  • Maintain a culture of continuous survey readiness.

  • Provide leadership during regulatory surveys, inspections, audits, and compliance reviews.

  • Monitor nursing documentation, resident care practices, and department processes for compliance.

  • Address identified deficiencies and oversee appropriate plans of correction.

  • Maintain awareness of changes in regulations and nursing standards affecting long-term care and skilled nursing operations.

Education & Clinical Development

  • Identify nursing education and competency needs based on clinical outcomes, regulatory requirements, and staff performance.

  • Support orientation and ongoing education for nursing team members.

  • Provide clinical coaching, mentoring, and leadership development.

  • Promote continuing education and professional growth.

  • Ensure required nursing competencies and education are completed according to applicable requirements.

  • Reinforce policies, procedures, infection-prevention practices, resident safety, and standards of care.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner closely with the Administrator and interdisciplinary leadership team to support overall community operations.

  • Collaborate with physicians, providers, Therapy, Social Services, Dietary, Activities, Admissions, and other departments to coordinate resident care.

  • Participate in and lead care conferences, clinical meetings, and case reviews as appropriate.

  • Maintain professional and compassionate communication with residents and families.

  • Address clinical concerns promptly and support effective resolution.

  • Promote continuity of care during admissions, transfers, hospitalizations, and other care transitions.

Emergency Preparedness & Clinical Leadership

  • Support the development and implementation of nursing-related emergency preparedness plans.

  • Provide clinical leadership during emergencies, adverse events, and other challenging situations.

  • Coordinate appropriate nursing response, communication, resident safety, and continuity of care.

  • Demonstrate sound clinical judgment, professionalism, resilience, and effective decision-making.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment required.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

  • 3–5 years of relevant nursing experience preferred, with experience in nursing leadership or management.

  • Previous Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing, Unit Manager, or comparable nursing leadership experience preferred.

  • Long-term care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, senior living, or geriatric nursing experience strongly preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of long-term care regulations, nursing standards, clinical practices, and survey processes.

  • Experience with QAPI, quality measures, clinical audits, care planning, and regulatory compliance.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, develop, and hold nursing teams accountable.

  • Strong clinical assessment, critical-thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with residents, families, employees, physicians, and healthcare partners.

  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and healthcare technology.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment.

  • Commitment to resident rights, dignity, safety, clinical excellence, and ethical nursing practice.
