Under the direction and supervision of both the registered nurses and medical providers, and in accordance with the policies of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, the Medical Assistant will perform medical and clinical support in both the administrative and clinical areas, performing duties essential to the overall functioning of the clinic. The MA will work in collaboration with the multidisciplinary clinic team, including other medical assistants, registered nurses, and providers throughout the shift, to perform duties as assigned and delegated. The Medical Assistant will also be responsible for communicating the status of delegated task completion and outcome of patient data findings. The Family Team is part of an integrated health care program for people experiencing homelessness. Services include episodic adult and child health care, pediatric and adult primary care, mental health, and substance use disorder treatment, family planning, nutrition, referral to primary and specialty care, social service advocacy and ongoing case management services. The position is crucial to assure the continuity of patient care, providing an essential link for communication involving all departments and including transportation. Responsibilities: Clinical Support : Under the direction of the Site Manager, RN Clinic Manager, and/or Charge Nurse, performs a variety of appropriately delegated patient care interventions Collaborates with the supervising RN throughout the shift to determine appropriate work assignments and priorities, as well as communicating the status of delegated task completion and outcome of patient data findings. Maintains timely ongoing verbal communication in order to assure good patient care and the effective running of the Clinic Responsible for collecting, collating, and entering data and information into the applicable database or format in an accurate and timely manner; maintains appropriate equipment logs and records per standards Accurately collects requested patient date (e.g. vital signs, weights and reason for visits), notifying the supervising RN of abnormalities; performs basic patient testing, including, but not limited to, tests for guiac, urine dip, and glucose fingerstick Treats patient in a manner that preserves and supports patient confidentiality, patient rights, and patient’s dignity; act as a member of the team of care givers Collects, labels, and sends specimens to the lab, with appropriate laboratory slips and/or requisitions Assists nurse/provider during complex treatments/procedures, including but not limited to, doing preps and set-ups for examinations/treatments, assisting during procedures when requested or required Check inventories on a weekly basis, order clinic supplies and stock them in their appropriate location upon arrival in order to avoid a shortage or misplacement of necessary supplies Clerical Support: Work effectively with BHCHP administrative and clinical staff to obtain information or paperwork necessary for enrolling patients into the appropriate medical or cash benefits programs. Copying, faxing and filing as needed Greet and register all patients Phone coverage and triage of calls Scheduling and recording primary and specialty appointments correctly and in a timely manner Handle third party billing process Qualifications: Successful completion of a Certified Medical Assistant program High School Diploma or Equivalent required Phlebotomy required Experience in a medical setting preferred Secretarial training a plus Knowledge of medical terminology and vital signs Computer skills preferred, including MS Office, MSI, IDX, Logician, EPIC Ability to operate basic office equipment (fax, copier) Compensation: The compensation is $22.25 per hour. Travel between sites is required. This position provides daily nursing support for clinic patients as part of a multidisciplinary team in a highly collaborative environment. Additionally, this position is crucial to assuring that clinically appropriate and timely decisions are made and actions are taken around patient assessments, administering of medications, treatments, and overall patient care. Other responsibilities include educating patients on medication and general health information. Responsibilities: Direct Nursing Care: Direct nursing care of patients on assigned Team to ensure that all needs of the patients are met, in conformance with established policies and procedures, as well as Department of Health rules and regulations Responsible for accurate assessments and documentation, reporting to appropriate personnel as indicated (i.e., on-call provider, nurse manager, Site Manager, etc.) Responsible for administering medications and treatments to all the patients assigned to his/her skillfully and correctly, documenting per policy.
