Patient Care Technician (PCT)/Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) - Acute Care Pediatrics (Part-time)

The Patient Care Technician provides direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and plan of care under the direction of area leadership, RN or licensed independent practitioner. Provide safe and direct care to patients in their assigned work location making appropriate age adjustments as needed. Monitor patients’ conditions and provide updates to the health care team. Provide direct and indirect care to patients with and without medical/surgical complications to meet their comfort, personal hygiene and safety needs. Provide care in accordance with nursing and medical plans of care and deliver per UVA Health Nursing and Hospital policy and procedure. Ensure assigned clinical location is maintained as a safe, clean, stocked environment to facilitate meeting patient needs. Maintain supplies, educational material, equipment, sterilization of supplies, instruments and the environment to promote quality, safe patient care outcomes (as applicable). Contribute to the patient experience by accurately identifying the patient, by observing safety goals and reporting to a licensed independent practitioner, manager and/or Registered Nurses. Identifying and reporting physical and mental r esponses posing harm to the Registered Nurse Obtain and record initial and ongoing patient information throughout the plan of care , including admissions as outlined by UVA Health policy . Obtain or assist in the collection of specimens for diagnostic or waived tests. Attend all mandatory in-services and training. Ensure patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives. Demonstrate ASPIRE Values in all human interactions. Demonstrates teamwork in the delivery of patient care. Recognizes the importance of time sensitive issues. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent Experience: No experience required Licensure: American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS Certification required. For Non-Certified team members hired prior to May 11, 2026, certification is not required , as relevant experience will be accepted in its place. Must have one of the following: Certified Nursing Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia Emergency Medical Technician in the Commonwealth of Virginia Military Corpsmen/Medic ( Combat Medic Specialist / Tactical Combat Casualty Care / Tactical Paramedic ) NREMT certification or Tactical Responder Certification LPN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia Graduate of a certified nursing program P atient C are T echnician Certification , preferred National Center of Competency Testing Currently enrolled student nurses who have successfully completed the Clinical Experience and Didactic PHYSICAL DEMANDS Job requires frequently bending/stooping and driving (Home Health Aide only) . Clinical duties include measuring and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination and administering medications as directed by physician or advance practice providers. The Medical Assistant plays an integral role in the care team model. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: High school degree (or GED) required. Current Certification as Medical Assistant required. Cleans rooms between patient visits in accordance with infection prevention and control standards. Administers medications and immunizations under authorization and supervision of physicians and/or advance practice providers. Processes messages from patients and front office staff to physicians and advance practice providers. Processes messages and call backs to patients, medical offices and pharmacies. Processes medication refills according to protocols. Maintains all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperature, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, sterilization fluid charge etc.) Performs EKG’s and simple (CLIA waived testing) medical office laboratory and screening tests. Collects and processes blood samples and other non-blood specimens for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.
