Job Description The Perioperative Services Lead Surgical Technologist is responsible for providing guidance, clinical expertise, and mentoring to members of the health care team within the specialty while optimizing available resources to achieve optimal patient outcomes. This position covers General Surgery, Transplant, Trauma, ECMO, GI, and HemOnc. This primary position at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, will include collaboration with the Nemours Ambulatory Surgery Facilities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to optimize available resources in achieving optimal patient outcomes. This position may require travel to the ambulatory surgery centers. Travel is compensated based on organizational policy. This position is expected to maintain all state and federal clearances for DE, PA, and NJ for periodic rotation to the surgery centers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey at the discretion of Perioperative Leadership. This includes current Pennsylvania (PA) FBI Fingerprint Report, PA Criminal Background Record, and PA Child Abuse Clearance. This position requires working shifts aligned with the needs of the department and the assigned FTE of the Lead Surgical Technologist. This position can include on-call and holiday requirements based on the needs of the department. Responsibilities Acts as a clinical resource for perioperative services personnel within the specialty using professional guidelines and evidence-based standards. Demonstrates proficiency in utilization and application of the electronic medical record, instrument management system, tissue management system, integration, navigation, and all intraoperative technology and software. Coordinates perioperative patient care with other members of the surgical team to include participation in staffing and scheduling requirements dependent upon the needs of the department. Performs surgical case management with other members of the surgical team to include timely review of the surgical schedule and revisions to procedure cards. Acts as a mentor and consultant to advise the perioperative team in areas of specialty expertise. Assists perioperative personnel in evaluating practice and in creating strategies for further improvement within the specialty Provides educational resources and coordinate with the perioperative clinical nurse educator regarding perioperative team education specific to the specialty. Organizes quality or performance improvement activities within the specialty. Acts as a positive change agent in coordinating, facilitating, and managing change within the specialty area and department. Facilitates or serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning perioperative patient care related to the specialty area with anticipation of surgical instrumentation, special equipment, support services, and vendor assistance. Manages the specialty operationally and fiscally to include, but not limited to, new product submissions and annual Capital Budget requests with consideration for financial implications of associated supplies, equipment, and human resources. Collects and analyzes data that applies to the specialty to facilitate collaboration and negotiation with stakeholders. Qualifications Pennsylvania Clearances required upon hire and must be maintained for the duration of employment: PA FBI Fingerprint Report, PA Criminal Background Record, PA Child Abuse Clearance Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery – Certified (NCCT) required upon hire and must be maintained for the duration of employment in this role. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) is required upon hire and must be maintained for the duration of employment. Coordinates the camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure. Performs additional counts as necessary. Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices. Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room. Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient. Follows established guidelines related to aseptic technique--utilizes proper scrub, gown and gloving technique for self, surgeon, and assistant; ongoing monitoring of asepsis throughout surgical procedures and reports breaks immediately. Demonstrates expertise in performance of scrub/surgical routines--anticipates needs of surgeon; consistently recognizes sequence of procedures; understands rationale of instrument usage; passes instruments correctly; appropriate review and preparation for assigned procedures. Consistently demonstrates knowledge of instrument usage, assembly of instrument sets, case set-up procedures, break-down of instruments set-ups, and protocol for transport to SPD for processing. Understands and utilizes established guidelines for operation of autoclaves and steris units--performs daily A-Test/Biological tests as required; performs proper care, handling, and assembly of instruments for processing; ensures complete/thorough documentation of all flash and steris cycles as per protocol. Accepts personal accountability for proper handling, judicious use, and optimum care of all department supply, instrument, and equipment inventory. Assists the RN with planning patient care--routine and special needs, patient positioning, surgical skin prep, documentation, and accuracy of patient charge process. Confines and contains sources of contamination throughout the surgical procedure--maintains neat and orderly sterile field, ensures ongoing gross cleaning of instrumentation, etc. Assists with ongoing maintenance of up-to-date preference sheets in coordination with circulating RN, Resource RNs, and department PCCs. Strives to ensure efficiency in turn around time between procedures--readily available; communication with circulating RN, OR Desk/Charge RN and/or department PCC; assists with room clean up tasks as necessary; prioritizes case set up process toward maximum efficiency. Qualifications Must possess one (1) year experience in hospital setting. Prefer minimum of 1 year current operating room experience. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
