Below, we describe the Hawaii nursing license renewal requirements. Out-of-state RNs and LPNs must obtain their Hawaii nursing license by endorsement or examination.

Step 1: Determine Your Renewal Deadline

Knowing your renewal deadline is one of the first steps in successfully completing a nursing license renewal in Hawaii. All LPNs, RNs, and NPs must renew their licenses by June 30 of every odd-numbered year, regardless of when it was issued. If you don’t renew by the expiration date, you will be unable to practice.

CNAs must renew their certification every 24 months. A renewal reminder will be sent to your home address 90 days before your expiration date.

Step 2: Satisfy Continuing Education Requirements

To renew a nursing license in Hawaii, you’ll first need to complete CEU and/or work requirements. These standards help ensure that you’re up to date on your nursing knowledge and industry changes.

See the requirements that correspond to your license or certification below:

CNA: Must have worked as a CNA for at least 8 hours within the last certification period.
RN/LPN: Must complete one of the following options described in Hawaii’s Continuing Competency Guidance and Information Booklet:
- Complete 30 hours of board-approved continuing education.
- Take a 120-hour refresher course evenly split between didactic and clinical learning.
- Obtain 2 semester credits of post-licensure education related to nursing.
- Demonstrate 120 hours as a preceptor for a nursing student or new nurse.
- Complete a nursing research study or evidenced-based practice project.
- Publish a peer-reviewed article, book, or chapter on nursing or another health-related topic.
- Develop and conduct a nursing education presentation totalling a minimum of 5 contact hours.
- Complete a board-approved nurse residency program.
- Complete a learning activity not listed after providing a sufficient description and receiving board approval.
APRN: APRNs licensed by national certification must show proof of current certification in order to renew. APRNs with prescriptive authority must also complete 30 hours of continuing education, 8 of which must pertain to pharmacology.

Step 3: File Your License Renewal Application

Once you’ve met all the requirements, you can apply online through your myHawaii account. If you’re an APRN, remember that you won’t be able to renew your advanced practice license until your RN license has been renewed.

The application fee schedule is:

RNs and LPNs: $196
APRNs: $36 (in addition to RN fees)
CNAs: $27
