Learn About a Day In the Life of a Surgical Tech: Responsibilities The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) works under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The CST ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. This role ensures the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Qualifications Job Requirements: Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited or other nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists. Must hold and maintain certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or NCCT certification if practicing prior to 2009. BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.
