Position Summary Provides specialized surgical technology support for adult cardiovascular and open-heart patients in an acute care hospital setting. Functions as a member of the cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) team during open-heart, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), valve, thoracic, and other cardiovascular procedures. Prepares the operating room, establishes and maintains the sterile field, anticipates the needs of the surgeon, and ensures required instruments, supplies, and equipment are available and functioning. Performs or assists with vein harvesting, including endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH), consistent with demonstrated competency, hospital policy, and applicable scope of practice. Communicates and collaborates with surgeons, registered nurses, anesthesia providers, perfusionists, and other Open Heart team members. Participates in emergency cases, on-call coverage, room turnover, equipment maintenance, inventory management, performance improvement activities, and orientation/precepting of surgical technologists joining the CVOR team. Qualifications · Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program required. · Minimum two (2) years of peri-operative Surgical Technologist experience in an acute care hospital required. · Minimum two (2) years of cardiovascular/open-heart (CVOR) surgical experience required. · Experience supporting CABG and other open-heart procedures required. · Endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH) experience strongly preferred. Required Licenses / Certifications · Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association required. · Surgical Technologist certification required. Communication Skills Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with surgeons, nursing staff, anesthesia, perfusion, patients, and all levels of the organization. The provision of direct and indirect patient care in the Medical/Surgical, Telemetry or Step Down Unit. Communicates with physicians about changes in the patient's clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, is able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision. Nursing care delivered complies with objectives and policies of the hospital. Utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation when delivering nursing care. Collaborate with multidisciplinary team member to provide age/ developmentally appropriate care in accordance with unit standards. Performs nursing techniques for the comforts and well-being of the patient. Prepares equipment and assists physician during treatments and examinations of patients. Assists in planning, supervising, and instructing Licensed Practical Nurses, and E.D. Techs, thereby providing care to a number of patients. Performs nursing techniques for the comfort and well-being of the patient. Participates in performance improvement to maintain provision of quality care. Prepares equipment and assists physician during treatments and examinations of patients. Assists in planning, supervising, and instructing secretaries, and Nursing Assistants thereby providing care to a number of patients. Incorporates critical thinking skills into patient care. Makes comprehensive nursing decisions based on the interpretation of facts and evaluations of patient outcome; modifies the plan of care based upon the evaluations. Demonstrates a professional, supportive attitude. Provides excellent customer service. Position requires considerable walking, standing, moderate lifting, exposure to patient elements and handling of emergencies and critical patient incidents. May be needed to work beyond the regular tour of duty or in another patient care unit as assigned by department head or nursing supervisor.
