Job Description: Registered Nurse (RN) ICU

Registered Nurse Job Summary: Directs patient care using critical care skills to determine appropriate nursing diagnosis, planning and implementing interventions and evaluating outcome for optimum patient outcome.

Registered Nurse Shift Availability:

  • Days

  • PRN (as needed)

Registered Nurse Essential Functions/Accountabilities:

  • Areas of responsibility include managing and providing critical nursing care in ICU overseeing the monitor tech and telemetry patients.

  • Plans for and provides direct patient care by using the nursing process with knowledge of hospital policies in order to accomplish goals for the delivery of nursing care.

  • Follows CMS guidelines to assure that indicators are met, thus improving patient outcome.

  • Follows established protocols for narcotic and other medication administration, ensuring the 6 right of medication administration are met.

  • Provides patient teaching according to the plan of care, beginning discharge planning at the time of admission.

  • Communicates pertinent information related to patient’s condition to inform physicians, additional staff and/or ancillary departments of changes, needs, and/or have an idea of care.

  • Documents findings, concerns, actions, and outcomes related to patient’s diagnosis for continuity of care.

Registered Nurse Principal Accountabilities:

  • Demonstrates the ability to read cardiac rhythms and treat them according to ACLS standards within 90 days of hire to provide advanced cardiac care to patients.

  • Shows ability to obtain and assess hemodynamic values and maintains care of invasive monitoring equipment to provide valuable information regarding cardiopulmonary function and early detection of change in condition.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of IV medications and drips restricted to use in the ICU setting, their indications, dosage, and the required monitoring to assure safe nursing practice.

  • Responsible for cardiac rhythm interpretation of the telemetry patients on the medical surgical unit; notification of the patient’s nurse and physician regarding arrhythmias; ability to give direction to and relieve the monitor tech/unit clerk as needed.

  • Prepared to respond to in-house code blue emergencies and to act as the team leader following standard ACLS and PALS protocols.

  • May be asked to serve as preceptor, providing training and practical experience needed to prepare newly hired RNs to gain independence.

Registered Nurse Education:

Minimum:

  • Associate degree in nursing (two-year program) or equivalent formal training program.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BSN)

Registered Nurse Experience:

Minimum:

  • Six months to one year of Med/Surg experience

Preferred:

  • Three to five years ICU experience

Registered Nurse Certification/Licenses:

  • Licensed in the State of Kansas as a Registered Nurse in good standing.

  • BLS, AC:S. PALS, and TNCC verification within 6 months of hiring

  • ICU Telemetry exam – 90 days to pass from hire.
