The Chess Team registered Nurse will provide nursing care to a wide variety of patients within the Cayuga Health System. During every shift, the Chess Registered Nurse will be member of a nursing team that provides direct nursing care to a specific unit within the system. It is conceivable that a Chess Registered Nurse may start their shift in one unit and then based on a change in census and acuity be transferred or moved to a different unit to meet operational requirements. While working within a nursing unit the Chess Registered Nurse acts as a patient advocate and facilitates communication between the patient, family, and other healthcare professionals. This results I a holistic approach to planning, organizing, teaching and relationship development that best meets the needs of the patient.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing plan considering the patient and family's individual, cultural, ethnic, and religious values and beliefs
  • Provide patient education for diagnostic procedures, medical conditions and treatment plans
  • Provide nursing care utilizing defined competencies and skills to areas assigned.
  • Demonstrates an aptitude and willingness to learn new responsibilities
  • Excellent organization, interpersonal, and customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently, make decisions, meet deadlines, multi-task and solve problems
  • Will be designated to train and work in various areas of facility providing safe & therapeutic patient care

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Associates of Applied Science in Nursing
  • Current NYS RN license
  • BLS for all units and some may require ACLS and/or PALS

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Previous critical care experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers (g. use of the computer keyboard) light lifting in regards to patient care. Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time as it pertains to patient care. Must be physically able to operate the equipment used for the job.

Job Description Position Summary: Provides high quality nursing care for assigned patients in a scientific and humanistic focus. The Newly Licensed Registered Nurse (NLRN) utilizes a holistic systems approach to protect and promote client wellness and safety in the physiological, psychological, social cultural, developmental and spiritual domains. Nursing interventions are interdisciplinary, age specific and are directed toward optimal wellness. The NLRN is a nurse who is in their first year of nursing practice. This role ends on the one‐year anniversary of their hire date. At this time, the NLRN transitions to the role of Staff Registered Nurse. The NLRN may occupy a Staff Registered Nurse position after the matching process, but is still considered an NLRN for the first year of practice. NLRNs are not allowed to cover the unit for lunches or breaks or be a shift/charge nurse until they have completed the orientation period. Education, License & Cert: The NLRN must be a graduate of a Diploma, Associate Degree or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program and have passed the state board examination by the State Board of Nursing in their state of practice before beginning employment.
