Available Schedules

Helping Hearts offers a variety of client assignments. Available shifts may include:

  • Morning shifts

  • Day shifts

  • Evening shifts

  • Night shifts

  • Overnight shifts

  • Weekday assignments

  • Weekend assignments

  • PRN and as-needed assignments

  • Temporary assignments

  • Recurring assignments

  • Shifts ranging from 4 to 12 hours

Shift lengths, start times, end times and available days depend on current client needs, care plans, locations and personal preferences.

Applicants must provide their complete availability so they can be considered for appropriate assignments.

Once a caregiver accepts a permanent, temporary or PRN assignment, dependable attendance and completion of the entire scheduled shift are required.

Client Care Levels

Helping Hearts supports clients with different levels of need. Assignments are matched according to the caregiver’s experience, skills, availability, location and ability to safely complete the approved care plan.

Caregiver assignments may range from companionship and light housekeeping to complete personal care, dementia support, incontinence care, bedbound care and transfer assistance.

Applicants must honestly disclose their experience and any limitations that could prevent them from safely completing an assignment.

Companionship and Household Support

Some clients may primarily need:

  • Meaningful conversation and companionship

  • Emotional support and reassurance

  • Social engagement

  • Recreational activities

  • Assistance maintaining daily routines

  • Safety observation and general supervision

  • Meal preparation and cleanup

  • Hydration reminders

  • Grocery organization

  • Approved errands

  • Light housekeeping

  • Accurate documentation of completed responsibilities

Caregivers should encourage appropriate independence while remaining attentive to the client’s safety and preferences.

Personal Care and Activities of Daily Living

Other clients may require hands-on assistance with:

  • Bathing or showering

  • Sponge baths and bed baths

  • Personal hygiene

  • Dressing and undressing

  • Grooming and hair care

  • Oral care

  • Toileting assistance

  • Incontinence care

  • Changing protective undergarments

  • Perineal care

  • Meal assistance

  • Feeding assistance

  • Hydration reminders

  • Walking and mobility assistance

  • Wheelchair support

  • Entering and exiting vehicles

  • Repositioning in a bed or chair

  • Changing bed linens

  • Comfort and safety measures

  • Maintaining dignity, privacy and independence

Caregivers must explain personal-care tasks before beginning and provide assistance in a respectful, patient and professional manner.

Dementia and Memory Care Support

Some assignments may involve clients living with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or other cognitive conditions.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Providing calm and consistent supervision

  • Offering appropriate redirection and reassurance

  • Supporting established routines

  • Monitoring for confusion, agitation or wandering

  • Observing changes in behavior

  • Encouraging safe and appropriate activities

  • Maintaining a quiet and supportive environment

  • Following client-specific communication strategies

  • Remaining aware of the client’s location and safety

  • Immediately reporting significant behavioral or cognitive changes

  • Documenting all concerns and completed care responsibilities

Caregivers assigned to dementia or memory-care clients must remain patient, attentive and aware of the client’s safety throughout the entire shift.

Mobility, Transfers and Higher-Assistance Care

Some clients may have limited mobility, be at high risk for falls or require significant physical assistance.

Depending on the care plan, caregiver experience and completed training, responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with walking and balance

  • Supporting clients using walkers or other approved mobility devices

  • Supporting wheelchair mobility

  • Assisting with bed mobility

  • Repositioning clients in a bed or chair

  • Helping clients move between a bed, wheelchair, chair, commode or toilet

  • Using an approved gait belt when directed

  • Assisting with sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit transfers

  • Completing approved one-person transfers

  • Following all two-person transfer requirements

  • Using a mechanical or Hoyer lift when required

  • Checking equipment before use

  • Following fall-prevention procedures

  • Requesting assistance when care cannot be completed safely

Caregivers must never attempt an unsafe transfer or use equipment they have not been trained and authorized to operate.

Bedbound-Client Support

Some clients may be bedbound or require extensive hands-on assistance.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Providing bed baths

  • Completing personal hygiene

  • Providing toileting and incontinence care

  • Changing protective undergarments

  • Assisting with perineal care

  • Repositioning according to the care plan

  • Using pillows or approved positioning supports

  • Keeping bedding clean, dry and free from wrinkles

  • Changing linens while the client remains in bed

  • Monitoring common pressure areas

  • Observing for redness, bruising or skin concerns

  • Providing feeding and hydration assistance

  • Maintaining the client’s dignity, comfort and privacy

  • Reporting all changes in condition immediately

Caregivers must use proper body mechanics and request assistance whenever a task cannot be completed safely.

Meal Preparation and Hydration

Depending on the assignment, caregivers may be responsible for:

  • Planning meals according to client preferences

  • Following approved dietary instructions

  • Preparing meals and snacks

  • Assisting with feeding

  • Encouraging regular fluid intake

  • Observing and documenting food and fluid intake

  • Assisting with grocery organization

  • Following safe food-handling practices

  • Washing dishes

  • Cleaning meal-preparation areas

  • Reporting concerns related to appetite, swallowing or hydration

Difficulty swallowing, coughing during meals, choking, vomiting or significant refusal to eat or drink must be reported immediately.

Light Housekeeping

Caregivers may be responsible for maintaining a clean, safe and organized client environment.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Tidying the client’s immediate living space

  • Dusting

  • Sweeping

  • Vacuuming

  • Mopping approved areas

  • Washing dishes

  • Cleaning frequently touched surfaces

  • Laundry and linen changes

  • Cleaning the client’s bathroom

  • Organizing care supplies

  • Removing trash

  • Keeping walkways and emergency-access areas clear

  • Reporting unsafe conditions or needed repairs

Housekeeping responsibilities are limited to the client’s approved service area and assigned care-plan tasks.

Non-Medical Health Support

Helping Hearts provides non-medical personal support. Caregivers must remain within their authorized role and follow the client’s approved care plan.

Depending on the assignment, responsibilities may include:

  • Providing medication reminders

  • Assisting with approved blood glucose monitoring

  • Documenting readings when required

  • Observing food and fluid intake

  • Monitoring the client’s physical, emotional and behavioral condition

  • Reporting pain, swelling, bruising, redness or skin concerns

  • Reporting falls, injuries or changes in mobility

  • Reporting confusion or unusual behavior

  • Following established emergency procedures

  • Contacting the Helping Hearts office immediately when concerns arise

  • Completing accurate electronic documentation

Caregivers must report concerns rather than independently diagnose or treat them. Caregivers must not assume that someone else has already reported a change in condition.

Medication Reminders

Medication support is limited to the responsibilities authorized in the client’s approved non-medical care plan.

Caregivers may:

  • Provide scheduled reminders.

  • Assist with an approved prefilled medication planner.

  • Place approved medications in a cup when directed.

  • Remind the client to self-administer their medication.

  • Document reminders and client responses.

  • Report refusals, missed doses or other concerns.

Caregivers must not independently administer medication, change medication instructions or provide medical advice outside their authorized scope.

Transportation

When required and authorized, caregivers may:

  • Transport clients to appointments.

  • Assist with approved errands.

  • Transport clients to social activities.

  • Help clients enter and exit the vehicle.

  • Secure mobility equipment appropriately.

  • Follow all client-specific transportation instructions.

  • Maintain a clean, safe and insured vehicle.

  • Report any transportation concern immediately.

Caregivers may only transport clients when the assignment has been approved and all transportation requirements have been satisfied.

Night and Overnight Shift Expectations

Caregivers working night or overnight assignments must remain fully awake, alert and attentive throughout the entire shift.

Nighttime responsibilities may include:

  • Completing scheduled safety checks

  • Monitoring the client’s condition

  • Assisting with toileting and incontinence care

  • Repositioning the client

  • Providing medication reminders when authorized

  • Responding immediately when the client needs assistance

  • Completing approved nighttime housekeeping responsibilities

  • Maintaining a clean and safe environment

  • Preparing the client’s environment for the morning routine

  • Documenting care and observations in real time

Sleeping, napping, dozing, lying down to rest or closing your eyes for extended periods is strictly prohibited, even when the client is sleeping.

Failure to remain awake and attentive may result in immediate removal from the assignment and additional corrective action.

Physical Requirements

Caregiving can be physically demanding. Applicants must be able to safely perform the essential responsibilities of an accepted assignment, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Physical responsibilities may include:

  • Standing, walking or sitting for extended periods

  • Frequently bending, reaching, turning and twisting

  • Kneeling or squatting when necessary

  • Using stairs in certain client environments

  • Assisting clients with walking and balance

  • Pushing or maneuvering a wheelchair

  • Assisting with repositioning

  • Supporting transfers according to the care plan

  • Using approved transfer equipment

  • Handling laundry, groceries, household supplies and care equipment

  • Completing light housekeeping

  • Wearing required personal protective equipment

  • Responding promptly during falls, emergencies or changes in condition

  • Remaining awake throughout night or overnight shifts

Applicants must review assignment requirements before accepting a shift and disclose any limitation that could prevent them from safely providing the required care.

Client Environments

Care may be provided in:

  • Private homes

  • Independent-living communities

  • Assisted-living communities

  • Memory-care communities

  • Senior-living facilities

  • Other company-approved settings

Applicants should understand that:

  • Some homes may have dogs, cats or other household pets.

  • Some clients require non-smoking caregivers.

  • Some client environments may not be completely smoke-free.

  • Applicants must disclose allergies, pet restrictions and smoke sensitivities.

  • Family members or other approved individuals may be present.

  • Facility employees may be present.

  • Approved safety cameras or monitoring equipment may be present.

  • Caregivers must not move, unplug, cover or interfere with safety equipment.

  • Caregivers must follow all household, facility, confidentiality and safety requirements.

  • Transportation and parking conditions will vary.

  • Caregivers must respect the client’s home, property, privacy and personal preferences.

  • Unauthorized visitors, children and pets are not permitted during shifts.

Hours and Assignment Disclaimer

Specific hours and assignments depend on:

  • Current client needs

  • Requested service hours

  • Client-care level

  • Client location

  • Caregiver experience

  • Caregiver qualifications

  • Caregiver availability

  • Transportation and travel distance

  • Client and family preferences

  • Assignment compatibility

  • Changes in the client’s condition or service needs

Full-time, part-time or PRN status does not guarantee a specific client, assignment, schedule or number of weekly hours.

Client schedules may increase, decrease, change or end based on the client’s needs and preferences.

Clients and families may request a different caregiver when they believe another caregiver would be a better fit. Caregivers may also be considered for additional assignments when their experience, availability and location match current needs.

Once a caregiver accepts an assignment, dependable attendance and completion of the entire scheduled shift are required.

Employment Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Possess a high school diploma, GED or equivalent.

  • Have at least one year of professional caregiving, personal-care, home-care or related experience.

  • Demonstrate compassion, patience and professionalism.

  • Be dependable and punctual.

  • Follow written care plans and verbal office instructions.

  • Communicate professionally with clients, office staff and approved facility personnel.

  • Complete accurate electronic documentation during every shift.

  • Have reliable access to a smartphone.

  • Maintain client confidentiality.

  • Maintain professional boundaries.

  • Remain attentive and awake throughout every assigned shift.

  • Follow attendance and call-off procedures.

  • Follow clock-in and clock-out requirements.

  • Safely perform the essential responsibilities of accepted assignments.

  • Complete required orientation and training.

  • Complete assignment-specific instruction.

  • Immediately report changes in condition, incidents, injuries and safety concerns.

  • Follow all Helping Hearts policies and procedures.

Transportation Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A valid driver’s license

  • Current automobile insurance

  • Reliable personal transportation

  • An acceptable driving record

  • The ability to travel to assigned client locations

  • The ability to transport clients when required and authorized

Public transportation, rideshare services or transportation provided by another person may not satisfy the requirements of assignments requiring immediate or independent travel.

Caregivers must immediately report any change affecting their driver’s license, insurance, vehicle availability or ability to transport clients safely.

Attendance and Communication Expectations

Dependability is essential in home care.

Caregivers must:

  • Arrive on time for every accepted assignment.

  • Confirm assignments according to company procedures.

  • Maintain reliable telephone communication.

  • Respond promptly to scheduling messages.

  • Notify the office immediately if an emergency affects attendance.

  • Follow all call-off procedures.

  • Clock in and out from the approved client location.

  • Remain with the client until the scheduled end of the shift.

  • Remain until properly relieved when continuous care is required.

  • Never leave a client unattended when supervision is required.

  • Never leave early without office authorization.

  • Notify the office if a client or family asks them to arrive late, leave early or change the scheduled hours.

  • Complete all required documentation before the end of the shift.

Failure to report for an accepted shift, leaving a client without authorization or failing to follow safety procedures may result in removal from the assignment or additional corrective action.

Documentation Requirements

Caregivers must document services accurately and in real time.

Required documentation may include:

  • Completed care-plan tasks

  • Personal care provided

  • Meals and hydration

  • Medication reminders

  • Toileting and incontinence care

  • Repositioning

  • Blood glucose-related support

  • Client behavior and mood

  • Changes in condition

  • Skin observations

  • Incidents

  • Office notifications

  • Transportation

  • Incomplete tasks and the reason they were not completed

Caregivers must never mark a task complete when it was not performed.

Background and Screening Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Complete a comprehensive background check covering up to 15 years, where legally permitted.

  • Complete required abuse, neglect and sex-offender registry checks.

  • Complete a pre-employment drug screening when applicable.

  • Participate in random drug screening when required by company policy.

  • Provide complete and accurate application information.

  • Report criminal charges or legal changes that may affect their ability to provide safe care.

  • Have no disqualifying history that would prevent safe employment, subject to applicable laws and individual review.

Employment offers are contingent upon satisfactory completion of required screenings, employment verification, reference checks and onboarding requirements.

Required Employment Information

Applicants must provide:

  • A complete five-year employment history

  • Five professional references

  • Current contact information for all references

  • No friends or family members as professional references

  • Proof of high school completion, GED or equivalent

  • Complete and accurate application information

  • Required payroll and tax information

  • Any additional state, client or assignment-specific information

Professional references should include former supervisors, managers, employers or other individuals who can verify the applicant’s reliability, work performance and caregiving experience.

Important Physical Document Requirement

Applicants must possess physical copies of all required employment documents before advancing through the interview and hiring process.

Applicants must be prepared to present:

  • A valid government-issued photo identification

  • A valid and current driver’s license

  • Current automobile-insurance documentation

  • Proof of high school completion, GED or equivalent

  • Social Security documentation when required for payroll and tax purposes

  • A birth certificate or other acceptable proof of identity or age when legally permitted and applicable

  • Any professional licenses or certifications applicable to the position

  • Any additional state, client or assignment-specific documentation

Professional Appearance and Uniform

Caregivers must arrive clean, prepared and professionally dressed.

The required uniform includes:

  • Solid navy-blue scrubs

  • Closed-toe and closed-heel shoes

  • Clean and professional appearance

  • Hair secured when necessary for safety

  • Appropriate personal hygiene

  • No strong fragrances

  • Required personal protective equipment when applicable

Caregivers must maintain the required professional appearance throughout every shift.
