Learn About a Day in the Life of a Medical Assistant:

The Medical Assistant provides superior patient care and performs administrative and delegated clinical tasks that support patients in a clinic-based environment as part of a care team led by the physician and/or advanced practice provider.

 

  • Enters, maintains, and reports all medical history, medical coding, and files claims using an Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Patient visit support that may include: Greeting patients, and escorting patient to exam room and/or taking patients’ vital signs, and other applicable medical information to effectively support the reason for the patients visit and recommended treatment.
  • Sterilizes and prepares medical instruments. Ensures patient exam rooms are disinfected, orderly, and ready for incoming patients. Provides patients with privacy, comfort, safety and hygiene.
  • Assists in maintaining inventory and stocking supplies, instruments and equipment for all exam rooms.
  • Maintains appropriate paperwork for inventory control and reviews orders received for completeness.
  • Addresses and requests referrals and other insurance authorizations in addition to passing along patient information for prescription, x-ray or lab requisitions to necessary parties. This includes calls to pharmacies, hospitals, and labs.

Job Requirements: 

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Basic Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Microsoft Office knowledge.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.

 

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Associate’s degree.
  • Graduate from an accredited medical assistant/medical technologist school/program or two years of Medical Assistant experience.
  • Current national certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
  • For OHI clinics, EMT/Paramedics meet qualifications for hire.

How you’ll make an impact in this role Assist with the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a provider (Physician or Advanced Practice Provider). Assist with treatments ordered by provider as supervised by provider or registered nurse. Perform select clinical duties. Interview patients, measure vital signs, and record information on patients' charts. Prepare treatment rooms for examination of patients. Perform basic clerical duties including answering the phone, maintaining records, and filing. Perform basic materials management functions to include ordering and stocking of supplies. Assist with maintaining a clean and orderly environment. May document the provider's encounter with patients.
