Medic, Emergency Department

                                                                                                                                           

MAIN FUNCTION:

Assists nurses in meeting patient needs as directed by RN or physician. 

Follows WCH Nursing Philosophy and practice model which are derived from the Synergy model and appropriate Service Standards as outlined in Employee Handbook.  

 

RESPONSIBLE TO:     Department Manager, Charge Nurses, RN, LPN

 

 

MUST HAVE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current Ohio Department of Public Safety Paramedic certification
  • Maintain a current AHA (American Heart Association) Healthcare Provider BLS card while in this position.
  • ACLS and PALS within 1 year of hire, and maintain while in position

 

PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES:

  • Personal computer experience and keyboarding skills

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Employees in this position may be:

  1. Exposed to blood, body fluids and/or airborne pathogens and are required to wear barriers
  2. Employees in this position must be able to push, pull, lift, carry, turn, crouch, and bend as     necessary to complete nursing care tasks
  3. Required to take "on call" status
  4. Reassigned to a nursing unit to assist with tasks within current job description

  • Provide appropriate hygiene care for patients 

 

  • Provide comfort measures 

 

  • Follow infection control guidelines and safety precautions

 

  • Performs nasopharyngeal / oropharyngeal airway management

 

  • Performs intraosseaous insertion

 

  • Performs venipuncture and initiates saline lock or plain IV fluid infusion

 

  • Performs phlebotomy, accurately labels lab specimens

 

  • Collects and transports specimen(s) 

 

  • Performs surgical / procedural preps

 

  • Performs eye irrigation with or without Morgan lens

 

 

  • Transports stable patients (as identified per hospital policy) who require cardiac monitoring

 

  1. Assist Triage nurse with the following:

 

  • Complete pre-registration of patients

 

  • Performs vital signs

 

  • Completes and documents rapid triage assessment

 

  1. Follows American Heart Association ACLS guidelines under the direction of a physician:

 

  • Performs the function of Defibrillation, Synchronized cardioversion, and Transcutaneous pacing

 

  • Performs appropriate airway management

 

  • Administers the following medications via intravenous or intraosseous push method in an emergency (code) situation under the direct supervision of an RN:
    1. Amiodarone
    2. Atropine
    3. Calcium Chloride
    4. Dextrose
    5. Epinephrine
    6. Lidocaine
    7. Narcan
    8. Sodium Bicarbonate

 

  1. Accurate documentation of care provided in a timely manner

 

  1. Demonstrates reasonable and rational judgment in decision making

 

  1. Assists with flow of unit:

 

  • Answers the EMS line, obtains and documents, squad report and appropriately communicates the report to the Charge RN and ED Physician

 

  • Obtains  & returns supplies and equipment as directed

 

  • Operates and cleans equipment (ex. carts, IV pumps, wheelchairs) safely and appropriately.  Initiates work orders/ reports to appropriate person

 

  • Cleans and maintains nursing station, report and break rooms, kitchen areas and others as assigned

 

  • Fulfills secretarial tasks such as:  entering orders, arranging transfers, loggings patients, organizing charts, answering phones
