This is a 9-month position. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, and must meet all current and applicable local, state, and federal licensing requirements for Registered Nursing or Licensed Practical Nursing and any certifications based on school requirements. A nurse that protects and promotes student health. Ability to work alone and with others. Ability to communicate with parents, physicians, care givers, staff, and the community. Experience with students with acute and chronic health conditions. Ability to make decisions and act in an emergency situation competently. Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

QUALIFICATIONS :
  1. Current Alabama License as a Licensed Practical Nurse 2. Clinical nursing experience with school age children in the hospital, community health or a pediatric clinic is desired.
  2. Clinical nursing skills necessary to provide safe care to students with special health care needs.
  3. Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with the supervising RN, administration, parents, faculty and students.
  4. Possess current CPR certification (this may be obtained after employment).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT :

REQUIRED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
  1. Collaborates with the supervising RN to identify students with routine or special health care needs or procedures and follows the plan of care developed through collaboration with the supervising RN, health care prescriber and parents.
  2. In collaboration with the supervising RN, gathers all pertinent data to develop and implement an individualized health care plan for students with health care needs.
  3. Communicates effectively and in a timely manner to the supervising RN to keep health care plans current and accurate.
  4. Follows procedures established to notify the System Head RN of expected or unexpected absences.
  5. Provides direct nursing services which include the administration of medications following all criteria in the Medication Curriculum developed by the Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  6. Provides nursing care services as directed by the prescriber for students who require specialized procedures, such as:
  1. gastric tube insertion, replacement, and feedings
  2. urinary catherization, clean and sterile
  3. administration of injectable medications
  4. administration of rectal or vaginal medications
  5. tracheotomy care, including suctioning invasive procedures
  6. techniques sterile procedures
  7. receipt of verbal or telephone orders from a licensed prescriber

7. Documents all nursing activities thoroughly and accurately following established protocols.

8. Compiles required departmental and/or state reports accurately before scheduled deadlines.

9. Assists in carrying out policies and procedures for control of communicable diseases within assigned schools.

10. Administer first aid to students according to standard nursing protocols and school policies.

11. Assist teachers with health education programs as directed by the supervising RN.

12. Performs nursing care within the LPN scope of practice as defined by the Alabama Board of Nursing.

13. Perform screening procedures as directed by the supervising RN.

14. Serve as a health liaison between school, healthcare provider, family and community.

15. Report potential or current school health/safety/abuse issues or code of conduct violations to the Principal and supervising RN.

16. Maintains privacy and confidentiality in accordance with The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).

17. Assists the supervising RN in the development, implementation, and maintenance of the school health office as assigned.

18. Performs other duties as assigned by the Student Services Director and/or Head Nurse.

Notify parents/caregivers when medications are running low and ensure paperwork is properly maintained in file for students receiving medications. Contact parents/caregivers of ill or injured children, document all head injuries, file necessary accident reports in accordance with established health office procedures and prepare student to go home if necessary. Compile and submit student injury reports to District Nurse and appropriate administrative personnel. Serve as worker's compensation representative to assess and assist injured personnel with treatment options. Perform clerical and secretarial duties as necessary, including answering phones, typing, copying, and preparing/mailing outgoing health correspondence. Provide students and parents with options for treatment and/or community resources by serving as a liaison to outside agencies and programs. Organize, schedule and implement health screening programs to include: vision, hearing, dental, etc. Record, track results, make recommendations for follow-up care for students who did not pass initial testing. Notify building administrator, teachers, transportation and kitchen staff of students with significant health concerns. Attend staffing/child study meetings as needed. Research as needed regarding medications and conditions. Report suspected abuse or neglect to Administrator and proper authorities. Assist in facilitating activities that promote healthy lifestyles for school and community (blood drives, immunization clinics, cholesterol screenings, dental clinics, etc.) Assist in control of nuisance diseases per instruction of District Nurse and state health department. Report infectious diseases to District Nurse and state health department as per CDPHE guidelines. Maintain a clean and orderly health office, including inventorying and ordering supplies. Assist with maintenance of the MSDS book for the building. Engage in ongoing professional development. Perform other duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma or equivalent. Training as one of the following desired: LPN, Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Assistant or Certified Nursing Assistant. EXPERIENCE: 0-2 years' experience in related field. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: CPR and First Aid required. Criminal Background Check required for hire. TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES: Communicate effectively in written and oral form using positive interpersonal skills Consultation skills Ability to work with children and children with special needs Knowledge of medial, developmental, emotional, and behavioral disabilities Ability to assess and manage a medical or physical emergency Knowledge of Universal Precautions Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent policies and building/department procedures Ability to grow and develop knowledge, skills, and attitude through professional development. MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE: Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals. Operating knowledge of medical equipment (B/P, nebulizer, glucose meter, audiometer, etc.) preferred at hire.
