Responsibilities

  • The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) works under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.
  • The CST ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.
  • This role ensures the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:  

  • Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited or other nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists.
  • Must hold and maintain certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or NCCT certification if practicing prior to 2009.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.
  • Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited or other nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists.

Preferred Job Requirements:  

  • Previous experience as a surgical technologist.

Prepare operating rooms for surgery by ensuring all necessary equipment and instruments are sterile and functional. Assist in preparing patients for surgery, including positioning, draping, and providing appropriate surgical attire. Scrub arms and hands and assist the surgical team to scrub and put on gloves, masks and surgical clothing. Maintain sterile techniques during surgical procedures and promptly report any contamination. Pass instruments, supplies, and equipment to the surgeon and surgical assistant as needed. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and adjust to changing circumstances. Prepare and handle specimens obtained for laboratory analysis following established procedures. Perform counts of surgical instruments, sponges, and supplies to prevent retention in the patient. Maintain supply of fluids, such as plasma, saline, blood, or glucose, for use during surgical procedures. Clean and restock the operating room post-surgery.
