Job Description

Summit Health is seeking a Certified Nurse Midwife to join our established group. This Midwife is responsible for providing prenatal and postpartum care to patients in an outpatient & inpatient setting.

Responsibilities include:

  • Obtain detailed and accurate history, perform an appropriate physical examination, identify problems, record information and interpret information to determine a plan for OB/GYN patient care.
  • Initiate diagnostic procedures, order and interpret laboratory, radiological, interpretation of fetal heart rate tracing, and other diagnostic studies as appropriate for OB/GYN patient care.
  • Provide OB/GYN patient counseling and OB/GYN patient education.
  • Prescribe medications and controlled substances allowed by CT law and as appropriate for therapeutic plan for OB/GYN patients.
  • Document all aspects of OB/GYN patient visit in chart including date of service, chief compliant, history, social history, family history, office course, diagnosis, therapeutic plan, medication administered, medication reconciliation, physical exam including pelvic and cervical exams.  Document name of supervising physician for each visit.
  • Order and administer injections and intravenous medications as necessary for OB/GYN patient care.
  • Collect fluids for diagnostic purposes, including but not limited to blood, urine, sputum, and exudates.
  • Interpret Non-Stress Test results for OB/GYN patients.
  • Assisting/Triaging patients who call Summit Health with problems or concerns.
  • Screen for Postpartum Depression in OB/GYN patient.
  • Take part in the day/night, weekday/weekend call rotation at the affiliated hospital under the supervision of a collaborating physician
  • Attend to uncomplicated vaginal deliveries
  • Assist on C-sections
  • Take part in antepartum/postpartum patient care
  • On call to the ER for obstetric/gynecologic emergencies

Description The per diem Midwife is responsible for the primary care and management of patient's health, including obstetric and gynecological care. Both low risk and high-risk pregnancies are managed as outlined within practice guidelines. Develops and supports excellence in the clinical practice and patient care. Maintains the Maternal Child Health Services mission, philosophy, and policies as well as the standards and practices of the Medical Center. Responsibilities 1. The midwife performs functions as an integrated member of the Department of OB/GYN and Nursing. The midwife will: Coordinate prenatal care to the caseload of patients in the ambulatory care setting. 2. Take pertinent history. Perform physical & pelvic examination. Obtain laboratory and diagnostic tests. Provide counseling & teaching as needed. 3. Identify risk factors and develop appropriate plan of management. Manage the care of selected patients admitted to the inpatient unit-based on unit protocols and with the collaboration of the attending physician. 4. Obtain physician consultation for plan of management for any medical or obstetrical complications not addressed in departmental protocols. Demonstrates knowledge of medical, psychosocial, economic, cultural and family factors that may effect care. Care is documented in legible, complete health records. Uses records that facilitate communication of information to consultants and institutions. Facilitates patient’s access to their records. Provides written documentation of risk assessment, course of management, and outcome of care. Provides for prompt entry on the health record of laboratory tests, treatments, and consultations. Provides a mechanism for sending a copy of the health record on referral or transfer to other levels of care. Treats records as confidential documents. Care is evaluated according to an established program for quality assessment that includes a plan to identify and resolve problems. Participates in a program of quality assurance/improvement for the evaluation of the nurse mid-wifery practice within the practice setting in which it occurs within legal requirements. Collects patient care data systematically and is involved in the analysis of that data for the evaluation of the process and outcome of care. Seeks consultation to review problems identified by the quality assurance/improvement program. Acts to resolve problems that are identified. Participates in peer review. Documents all situations, both internally and externally, that may arise out of the ordinary or are necessary to maintain accurate patient charts/records.
